I am stumped, what are these trees made of?

I think i remember seeing this diorama in a Verlinden or Nobemann book... as I recall, they are wooden round dowels that have been "whittled" to take away the perfectly straight appearance, and then small stems from a plastic Christmas tree were inserted into small holes... it has been a while, but I remember thinking it was a pretty cool idea.
