Hi,
I am interested in building a German Sd.Kfz 232 reconaissance vehicle in 1/35th scale.
Can you point me in the right direction as to which kit to buy, please?
Thankyou.
Joe.

I believe either Tamiya or AFV Club make one.

Hi Joe,
Tamiya do indeed make one it is about 35yr old but still nice for it's age & with an etch set can look even better, AFV have just released an Sdkfz 231 & it is rumoured that the 232 & possibly even the 233 will also follow, so up to you wether or not you want to wait a few months to see if they bring it out?? Hope this helps

Hi fellas,
Thanks for your replies.
I'll check out the Tamiya but I'll probably wait for the AFV Club offering!
Joe.

Here's the AFV in review. Unfortunately, they are only available here in the states via Ebay...coming from Asia. I'm not sure where you can grab one in the UK...

I checked out the new AFV Club offering & saw that it is an early version.
I would like to build a late version reconnaisance vehicle with large frame antenna. So would I have to go for the Tamiya offering?
If so, what AM kits would I need? Would it be possible to provide a list of AM kits for me, please?
Thanks for your help.

The inclusion of the frame antenna is not a mark of whether it's a late or early version. The basic vehicle was the 8 wheel armored car. Without the frame antenna, it was the Sdkfz 231 (8rad). With the antenna (and radio equipment, of course), it was the SdKfz 232 (8rad).
They were built simultaneously. A distinguishing feature of later production changes was the upgrading of all the vision ports and a new mantlet for the turret 20mm Kwk. The last SdKfz 232s did away with the frame antenna altoghether and instead, mounted a "star" type antenna.
If you consider yourself a more seasoned modeler, go with AFV Club SdKfz 231. If not or you really want the antenna version without waiting for the inevitable AFV Club SdKfz 232, go for the Tamiya SdKfz 232. you may find a suprising number of these on eBay due to modelers dumping them from their stash anticipating acquiring the new AFV Club kit.

Hi Joe,
AFV Club will probably follow up with the 232 soon enough. but if you can't wait and still want the benefit of the newer kit, I'd say get the AFV Club 231 as a base and see about picking up the Tamiya one cheap off ebay just to get the frame antenna and nose armour. Typically ebay gets flooded with older kits when a new version hits the shelves...

AFV Club has indeed announced a Sd.Kfz.232 Schwerer Panzerspähwagen (Early Type) and have even assigned it a kit number: AF35232.

To me, this is great news! Can't wait for them to show up in the States.

David, you may want to start a new thread asking for line drawings, etc.

If you're really interested in the subject, this new Squadron Signal book, "German Armored Cars in Action," is a good basic reference:
Armorama::German Armored Cars in Action
The title really should be "German HEAVY Armored Cars in Action" since it only cover the SdKfz 231+ (6-wheel), 231+ (8-wheel), and 234+ (8-wheel) armored cars.
I just got a copy, though, and can say that it actually has some very good information on the identification of sub-variants and manufacturer's differences. And, as a Squadron Signal book, the price was pretty modest.
If you want to build an SdKfz 232 (8-wheel) from either kit, and don't have any good references on the subject already, this is an excellent start.
