Hi guys,

I just have a question about the Tiger 1 AA mg34 which im hoping someone can answer.

Its my understanding that when in non combat situations, like a road march are gathering in an assembly area an mg34 was mounted to the commanders copula for air defence. My question is where did this mg come from? was a third mg34 stowed inside or was the coaxial mg removed and used as the AA mg?

I'm just working on the finishing touches of a late Tiger build and I have set it up with the coax mg removed and mounted to the copula. Is this correct?

Cheers
Matt

This photo;

shows clearly an MG34 with the armoured barrel sleeve. I don't think a tank crew would have any use for the standard sleeve.

However, that's not to say the gun was taken from the mantlet. The Tiger had internal storage for a third MG34.

The Tiger experts may correct me, but I thought it was the co-ax MG dismounted like you describe.

David, Tom, thanks for the quick replies.

David, would you say the safest bet would be to replace the coax mg and add an additional mg for the copula ring?

Thanks
Matt

The safest bet would be to omit the mantlet MG. Equipment shortages, you know.
