OK, tonight on NBC news with Tom Brokaw they were interviewing some American military official in Iraq (near Tikrit I believe) and behind him was a brand new looking M4 Sherman! It had U.S. markings and looked like it just rolled off the assembly line 60 years ago. I mean, it looked perfect.

If it was a museum display, why? Why would it be so perfect?

They may be showing this again on MSNBC tonight. Please someone find out what is going on. Do we have a new 'secret' weapon in the form of a 60 year old tank?

You're SURE it was a Sherman? Wow, thats odd indeed! I cant think of a single reason it would be there.

Is this what you saw: ?? Or ones similar? What you saw were captured Iranian army tanks. They have quite a collection at a military base near Tikrit. Among them are also an M4A1, M50 Super Shermans, M36 and M36B1,

Yeah that's it. It's no converted Sherman like I have seen for myself at Latrun. Why would the Iraqis have vintage WWII armor in their museum? I don't think Saddam would go out of his way to aquire it.

If it was painted in desert colors before, what GI's over there have enough time on their hands to be restoring 60 year old armor? If you see it on TV it looks perfect.

Got to be some reason it's there. Has to be some new weapon in the arsenal! Maybe it was brought there to take out Iraqi Panthers and Tigers...

I saw it too.I figure it was at a museum or something.
But as Wars drag on,commanders start doing goofy things.Maybe some REMF decided it would be cute to commandeer. And use as a BN commander's stafff vehicle.

Howdy all,

Many thx PorkChop for the image!!!........rreally! I was beginning to think we all just WANTED to see a Sherman in Iraq.
Now, just to throw some more 'road apples' on the fire......news reporter's don't just randomly set up a shot in any old location (especially when they have the time), no, they pick their spots and their backgrounds.....believe me. So, the background (i.e., the Sherman), was used for a purpose.....now, what purpose.......you guess.

..........sorry, follow up point.
Does anyone believe for a minute, the idea that Saddam would tolerate an already established image of American victory and firepower in ANY of his museum's or anything else for that matter!?!?!

.............really?

believe it or not I have more than 48 hours of war coverage from NBC on tape, bascially to look back on years down the orad to see how this war was reported... your point crossed my mind as well. As did the thought when I watched this tonight: "I wonder how long till someone brings this up on The Site."

Maybe some high ranking official is using it as a staff car, after they fixed it up. Who knows, I am tempted to go over there myself and find out. I would get a good tan to!

Wow Porkchop, impressive. AND you obviously have the ability to vidcap off those images, hmmmmmmmmmmm, do you have video from the 'opening bell' , you know, when they breached the berm? If so, do you remember when all those armoured vehicles were just rolling on by, loaded down with stowage and such? I think it would make for great reference pics for those of us (me included) building OIF vehicles! In fact priceless.
And, if no one else is much interested at the moment, I would be extremely greatful to you if you could Email me some M1A1 shots off Forum.
As I think I've already stated in other threads, I'm doing a build-up for a modeling show the middle of next month and those pics would be a great help. :-)

Thx,

Tread.

...indeed it was animal, in fact,..........no, I better not say it. Instead, I'll phrase it in the form of a question.....Who do you think taught and fueled the 'core' members of the Al Qaeda?

believe me, a painful answer.

Believe me...when I say that if the tank was purposely used as the backdrop for the interview, the news crew probably did so because they thought it was a modern, front-line vehicle!

I've worked in teevee news for more than fifteen years and the ignorance of 99.9% of journalists when it comes to military matters is staggering.

Think that would be higher or lower than the 'general' public. People don't do much homework, do they.

But, I sure hope that even the lamest camera guy in Iraq would know the difference between modern weapons and an antique!

Still hasn't answered the why it's there question though. This is a weird one to me.
