The battle of the Korsun Pocket is of great interest to me, I even did an alright looking diorama of it last year for a history project. I like the diorama I've got (pictures later on), but I really want to get a move on a second one. What I want to build for it is a German halftrack with a Pak mounted on it, and a Panzer IV with Dragon's Winter Panzer Riders. I've sent away for more figures and accessories, but I'm pretty crappy at getting the weathering for vehicles done, I need some help with my figure painting, and I haven't the slightest idea how to get a snowy/muddy base. Any suggestions or tips would be great. I'll be posting pictures as I make progress on it. Thanks for any help -Conor

Hi Conor,
I too have an interest in the Korsun Pocket Battles and like you have many of the same questions. I also am not very good with figures yet, but I am learning.
Scrol down in this forum to panther in Korsun. Its am Awesome build. Both Panther and Figures as well as the base are Super Well Done. Hope this helps a bit.
I am sure someone out there will point you in the right direction with the info you need. Happy Modeling and Have Fun.
Looking forward to your build,
milvehfan

This battle is also interesting to me and I am glad that you want to make a dio of this piece of history. I will be following what ever path you take with interest.
There is a good dio on this forum about Korsun that someone already pointed out so the bar has been set pretty high.

Yeah I looked through the Panther diorama last night, and the huge one too. Both of them set the bar practically out of reach, but I'll try to rank mine up there. The landscape is what really makes those dioramas amazing, anyone know what to use to get a realistic muddy/snowy effect?

I have confidence in you buddy! You can do it.
Small detail I felt I should bring up because of the other dios, etc. When you start on yours, keep in mind that there were no Panthers inside the pocket. The only tank unit inside was Wiking and as it was transitoning to a full Panzer Div at the time,it's new I Abt/5SS PzRegt was still equipping/training in Germany with its' new Panthers. The only Panthers invloved were in the relief force, outside of the pocket,IE PzRegt Bake,1Pz,LSSAH,etc. Just sayin'.

Hi, I think it depends if you want show a frozen ground or a muddy one. In Korsun it seems to me from the pictures I saw that the ground was mostly frozen. For such type of snow, I used Prochima microspheres, but also some white glue and Cyano glue that helps to simulate melted snow that frozen again.

Mail call! Got two kits today: DML's Winter Grenadiers (Gen 2) and a Tamiya Flak 38. Anyone know of a good base coat to put down before painting the figures in their actual colors? I haven't done that before & I think it would be wise to try it. Next two buys will be the halftrack with a pak & a Panzer IV. I think the scene might be of the troops in the pocket linking up with the relief force, but that's just a thought. Any suggestions?

No armor from inside the pocket made it out to link up with Bake or LSSAH. The vehicles all got stuck in the balkas/hills and swollen creek before the link up point. Only soldiers without vehicles got out and they mostly didn't even have their individual weapons with them.

Yes I know, the panzer and the halftrack are going to be part of Bake or LSSAH, and I'll use some spare figures as the troops escaping the pocket. Would you happen to know if Bake or LSSAH were in combat while troops in the pocket reached them? I'd think that would be a pretty cool scene, and a quick way to find a place for some of my Russians...

The relief force was in contact with the russians of and on during the during the main day of the breakout. There was the creek that acted as a "stand-off" between the relief force and the enemy. The Russians were more intent on wiping out the escaping troops,as they had already told Stalin that this was done. The Russian tanks would make forays into the escaping troops but would back off if they met resistance from Panzerfausts, etc. No tanker likes to attack infantry without their own infantry support and the Russian infantry was not as fast getting to the scene as their tanks were.
At one point, one of the very few German armored vehicles to reach the creek(sturmgeschutz) was driven into the creek to try to create a footbridge. The current was too fast and the creek too deep so this failed. It was a real mess and a whole bunch of escaping troops drowned trying to cross this last 20 feet of rushing water before freedom.
Bubbi Hartmann flew over this scene after the breakout and remarked on the thousends of bodies in the snow within a very small area.

I'm thinking I'll build a tree line to set up my armor/ infantry in, & I'll have some troops from the pocket running the gauntlet in the open to them. Can't decide if I should bring in my T/34 yet, but that's a ways away for now. The first few infantrymen of the diorama are getting built tonight!
