I am getting Dragon's Pz. IV ausf. J mid production, but have only found photo etch for the early and late models. Can anybody tell me how to convert to, preferably the early model or the late model? I'm not concerned in 1mm or less movement. Trying to stay on the lighter side of conversions.

Hi Matt
I'm not a 100% sure, but I don't think there's any real difference between an early and mid. produktion, at least not on the outside. I think the major changes are from mid/late to the final version. (flammvernichters, towing eyes, thomaskirts, etc.)

Which version removed the vision ports and turret side doors?

It's always hard to say with German equipement as they had a policy of first in last out in the factories but by early 45 the vision ports seem to be gone ..

Hopefully the vision ports are present, as I would like to build the early version.

Matt, you're in luck. Pictured in "Achtung panzer", is a Pz. IV ausf. J from the panzer museum in Saumur, with both pistol ports and vision ports in the turret hatches. So just go ahead with the project.

"I am getting Dragon's Pz. IV ausf. J mid production, but have only found photo etch for the early and late models."
The 'mid' Ausf.J kit is basically the 'early' Ausf.J kit with the flammvernichter exhaust tubes.
So you'd need to use a PE set for an 'early' Ausf.J.
Any 'late' Ausf.J PE set would have a completely different skirt & skirt hanger set up.
Griffon PE set BPL35010 ('Late' Ausf.H/'Early' Ausf.J),
is the sort of set that would cover most of your needs:
http://www.luckymodel.com/scale.aspx?item_no=GRM-BPL35010
..and if you want to replace the styrene exhaust tubes, this set:

Thanks Vanhall. This is the set I was looking at. I didn't know that the exhaust was not included.

I can always purchase am zimm for it. This will be my next competition build, so I will be putting a lot of $$ into it.

FWIW Matt,
Throwing money at a project does not 'help' it do well at competitions. Much of the judging is based upon well done construction, a well done paint job.
Obviously accuracy doesn't hurt, but it's typically NOT the most important thing. I would suggest just putting together a very good solid model, and taking it to a competition. The feedback you'll get from judges, as well as actually seeing first hand how everything works is more important than buying yet another aftermarket set for whatever tank you're building.

The only am parts I will be buying is a Griffon set of pe and the zimm. I am currently building the Pz.IV G and am sparing no expense to make it accurrate. I fully expect that the judges will be more interested in the detail work. I just enjoy working with pe and other am parts to set it apart from similar models.

The judges are NOT more interested in your detail work. They're more interested in being able to build a very solid construction with no seam lines, gaps, everything in alignment, etc. Combine that with a solid paint job that is smooth, solid, no over spray, no brush marks, etc. That gets you 75% of the way there.
