That's what the IDF and Mossad would like you to think! The real thing is that those tracks are not essential. Yep! You 'eard it firs' from me, folks! Them Merkava Mk. 3s and Mk. 4s are really HOVER tanks! Yep! Yessiree! From time-to-time they show photos such as these to make people think that these tanks are conventional powered ones with a high power-to-weight ratio. But in fact (and don't tell anyone you 'eard it from me, 'kay?) these tanks have a sooooooooper seeeeeeeeeeekret fusion core system that even the geee-willickers of Star Trek can't imagine! These exotic powerplants give the latest Merkavas (particularly the Mk. 4s) hover ability (they need it to conduct high speed cavalry charges over the rough terrain of the Golan Heights). And that gun you see sticking out of the turret? It ain't a 120mm gun - that's really a Particle beam Projection Cannon (PPC - remember BattleTech?), which can melt depleted uranium armor like a hot knife goin' thru butter! All ten inches of armor punched thru with a PPC shot at half-power! Want proof? Easy! Find pictures of the Merkava Mk.4s. Notice the turret of the Mk. 4s - shaped like a clam sucking through a straw right? I see it as a saucer - yep a SAUCER! It's a hot-dang UFO! #:-)

The Russians do the same thing with their T-80s and T-90s. In one, it even shows the T-80 firing whilst in mid-air. There's also a picture of an M1A2 doing the same thing (yep - a 70 ton M1A2 - I'm not jokiing!) also firing its gun whilst in the air.
The Thais often drive their Stingray tanks in full speed over rough terrain - the high power-to-weight ration makes the Stingray accelerate fast. Unfortunately, due to such rough handling, I hear many of their Stingrays have damaged suspension - thus costing the Thai Army quite a tidy sum of money to maintain.

there aren't no torsion bars in a Merkava.
it uses spring type shock absorbers like those found on Centurion tanks.

How about the poor schmucks who ride the BMD's down inside when they are airdropped!?!?
Pics in the Concord book show the thing leaving the back of the transport and perpendicular to the ground as the chutes deploy. Later pics show the thing after landing, burried up to the mid-roadwheel in dry earth.
ouch...
