Hi guys,

while scratchbuilding the 4.2 in.Chemical Mortar M2A1, I stumbled across a picture that show a 4.2 in. M30 mortar used by USMC in Korea 1953.I know that the weapon was developed at that time, so could it be confirmed that they were also used in combat on Korea?

Thanks

Yes, the M30 was issued in 1951 and was used in Korea as Regimental Artillery. Here is a pic from Aug '51 being fired by a 2 ID trooper.

Here's another one :

Maybe it's the very same picture you've seen (5th Marines Regiment, Korea 1953)...

On a webpage dedicated to the US Army 2nd Chemical Mortar Battalion in Korea, I've found this :

"During the month of July 1952, the Battalion received twenty M30 mortars. This acquisition increased the maximum effective range of the firing platoons by 2000 yards, from 3900 yards to 5900 yards. Precision registration using the new mortars demonstrated this improved range capability. This enabled the platoons equipped with the M30 mortar to reach lucrative targets that had been previously untouched by the fires of the old reliable M2. Although enemy activity during July and August was light, ample targets were found to provide the gun crews of the M30s necessary training to become proficient in the use of the new mortar."

@ Frenchy and Gino

Thanks for the confirmation, I guess I have to get another M30 now.

@ Frenchy

exactly the picture I found. Perhaps I should read the text, too.

Now the question is who does figures for Korea?

Dragon does a couple sets. They are not mortarmen, but could be converted in position to be.

Pusan Perimeter.

US Marines, Korea '50-'51

You can really use almost any late WWII figures. The equipment was almost the same and close enough for modeling.

Gino,

thhanks for the input, I got these sets and other Dragon WWII figures. What I look for are soldiers in plain HBT fatigues with only the belt as seen on many Korean War pics. I need figures that could be used for artillery and tank crews.( I know that HobbyFan has some sets, but the price?) I proposed this to Masterbox, let`s see how they react.
A last question: Who does WWII .30 cal and .50 cal ammoboxes in large quantities. I remember that Verlinden Productions had set of both WWII and Modern boxes, but are they still available?
