Did these vehicles run with sandbags on the inside floor in 'Nam?

I guess they were, as the fuel cells were located under the floor.

Talking about LVTP-5s in Vietnam, "Casting Alpha" by James R.Kelley is a good read about their use there..

You're welcome. I remember reading somewhere that the combination of one or more layers of sandbags in the cargo compartment and the sandbagged gun emplacement often built over the turret added significantly to vehicle weight. This additional weight destroyed suspension parts and cut down freeboard to 10 to 12 inches at the bow and less than half that at the stern...

On a side note the book's author name is Kelly, not Kelley...My mistake !
