Hi guys. Im at the end of my M1A2 Sep build and im currently working on the stowage. I know SEPs did not carry a ton like the tanks in the initial invasion so im not entirely sure how much im going to include. I purchased Legends M1 Stowage set and have some questions. This is the set:
I have questions on the colors of things:
- The water bottles would be sand right?
- What about the duffle bags? Olive Drab?
- The smaller ruck sacks with and without the ground mats, would they be olive drab also? What are these called?
- There are a few things that look like canisters with lids on them. What are these? What color would they be?
- The large rucks like the one sitting on the air unit in the photo, what are these called? What color?
Thanks guys. Ive been searching online and not having much luck and a lot of the models i see have things in all these various colors from forest green to olive drab. Its confusing

Hey Dave
Here are a few answers.
If by water bottles you mean the plastic jerry cans, then they can be sand coloured, Black or brown. The tone isn't fixed since the cans would be made by different manufacturers, they would fade differently etc
Not sure on the duffle bags, but OD is a common colour for them, hopefully someone with more knowledge can expand on this.
All the rucksacks are ALICE packs, which were the standard packs used by the US army during OIF. They can be OD, Brown, Woodland Camo or in possibly in UCP (universal camouflage pattern). Its up to you which colours you want to use, but if you're still unsure take a look at photos of OIF M1's with stowage on.
I'm not sure what you mean by cannister, but the 6ish rectangular boxes included in the set are 40mm ammo containers which were used for storing extra equipment, food or ammo since they're waterproof. They're usually OD, but I have seen some which were mounted to the outside of the stowage racks painted over in tan similar to the Abrams itself.
If you're talking about the large rectangular box next to the cylinder, they're both water coolers carried by crews. The cylindrical one is an Igloo container, and a quick google search will show you the colour combinations these come in.
The other container is a standard cooler (no particular brand) so you can pretty much choose a combination of your own. Have a look at reference photos of early invasion tanks to see the usual colours they come in.
Hope this helps

Dave,
Here are some color recommendations to get you going.
- The water bottles would be sand right?
The plastic water cans will be a pinkish sand.
- What about the duffle bags? Olive Drab?
Olive or medium green will work. The duffle bags get a tanish tint to them as the spend time in the sun and they trap fine dust very well...
- The smaller ruck sacks with and without the ground mats, would they be olive drab also? What are these called?
The smaller rucks look to be ALICE packs. The can be a dusty olive or Woodland Camo The sleeping pads are a grayish green color. Tankers usually kept their sleeping pads wrapped around the antennas to keep them out of the way.
- There are a few things that look like canisters with lids on them. What are these? What color would they be?
Probably water coolers. Brown, blue or orange with a white top. Go and look at the examples at Walmart.
- The large rucks like the one sitting on the air unit in the photo, what are these called? What color?
Looks to be a large MOLLE rucksack. The Molle rucksacks came in camouflage patterns: early ones (2000-2005) were woodland camo while the later ones (after 2005 ) were the Army Universal Digital pattern. After consulting with one of my retired Marines at work, I can safely tell you that the Marine MOLLE rucks had a similar life as discribed above: Woodland camo then the Temperate (green, black, sand and brown) USMC digital camo pattern.

Best thing is to check out the reference photos on Prime Portal or other sources and make your own judgements. Don't rely on other models because lighting or color chosen may be off. Seems like dark green is common!

Hi Dave,
judging from the photos in Tankograd M1A1/M1A2 SEP book, SAbrnms tanks in Iraq carry only little stowage. For example:
- spare roads wheels
- spare track links
- exhaust deflector (black or rust)
- spine boards (olive green)
- water cans (green and tan)
- igloo cooler (red with white lid)
- duffle bags (faded OD)
- traffic cones (orange)
- MRE boxes
- extra stowage boxes(e.g 40mm ammo boxes)
- extra .30 cal and .50 cal. ammo boxes
- leak oil tubs (extremly important);-))
Generally on patrols the tanker did carry too much rucks and bags with them.
