Hi all,

what do you all recommend as a nice, comprehensive kit of something current? Looking at trying my hand at something a bit more modern

Cheers,

Cokes.

Well, I guess any of the Tamiya modern armored vehicles are a place to start. Then, of course, are the offerings for self-propelled artillery from various other main line people. I personally rate the manufactures in this order. Tamiya, Dml, Itelari, R-M. I have a personal thing against Trumperter because of being burned early on. I guess just pick one of Tamiya's modern tanks and go for it. (I do have a huge soft spot in my heart for modern armor. I just really dig these big, powerful and FAST tanks of all the major powers today)

New Tamiya M1025 HMMWV. Only one of the "new" Tamiya OIF kits that is actually all-new and not a re-tool.

Wow! Another ODS fan! If you like vehicles, try the Tamiya M1025 Humvee. For tanks, I would recommend Tamiya M2A2 ODS, T72M1 or the M1A1. Have fun!

I can't believe i'm saying this, but....i'd have to agree with GreatBrit....the Challenger kit by Tamiya is the one of choice. The tank is sharp looking and the kit is top notch.

Give Ireland back to the Irish

Tamiya's new M113A2 APC is really nice if you can find one, and it comes with a lot of stowage. I would also recomend Tamiya's M1025 Humvee.

Just my $00.02

Raycel, from one cop to another, I agree on using the new release of the M113A2 from Tamiya. I have a photo of an engineer track simply loaded with the kind of stowage included with the kit. The vehicle is prominently displayed with two of the really large Iraqi road signs ("Baghdad") behind as a backdrop. Just right!

Howdy Cokes,

For the record, I'm proud to agree with 'greatbrit' !! (feel any better now 'greatbrit'? )

If you're doing Desert Storm, the Challenger I kit is dandy. Now, if you're doing Op Telic, the new Trumpeter Chally II kit is dandy as well!! Just add the Accurate Armour conversion kit and you're 'good to go!'.
If you're looking for soft-skins, or something less 'heavy', as Rob says, the new Tamiya 'Hummer' is a very safe bet. It's really well moulded, and is almost built like the real thing!
Now, this is assuming you want something from the Allied ranks......if you want something from the Iraqi side of the engagement, you'll have include a lot of holes, smoke damage, torn metal and such to your model.....

Tread.

Ahhhhh! Stop the Tamiya madness!

There are some great modern subjects by other companies. DML just released some M1's with OIF stuff and they are every bit as good, if not better than the Tamiya M1's. In fact, you even get length and link tracks that will look nicer than those rubber bands.

Also, the Trumpeter M1's are good too. All have their shortcomings of course.

Academy makes some very nice modern stuff as well.

Yes, the new Humvee is supposed to be great. But, with the over $30 price tag you can get two DML M1's if you order from Squadron. Or a DML M1, some of the new Archer OIF transfers and maybe a bit of aftermarket stowage too. A great deal in my opinion.

Basically anything Tamiya. The Tamiya Abrahms is supposed to be a good kit, or so I hear.

I have to agree with sniper that the dml m1 kits are good too. at least they got the track right. the new Marine M1A1 HA looks like it is a good kit.

Sorry,

I only know modern US stuff, so I'll stick with that... Best kits on market are at the moment:

Tamiya's Humvee (.50/Mk.19 or TOW), M2A2 is nice but needs work to be an actual ODS variant.
Dragon's M1A1HA Marines OIF or the (older yet still nice) M1A1HA
Revell/Italeri's M1A2 Abrams (NOT the Tamiya A2), HEMMT
Academy's M113 family
Accurate Armour's M1070 HET (very nice but very expensive)

The rest I forgot.. #:-)
