Hi all,
I´d like to build a little dio involving a Steyr 1500A/01 towing a 2cm Flak 38 in the African theater as part of the DAK circa 1941.
Could the Steyr tow a Flak 38 and is this scheme possible?
Thank you in advance.

Raul;
Hi!
Steyr 1500 towing a 2cm Flak 38 in / for the DAK?
ABSOLUTELY!
The 1500A/01 was a utility car / light 4x4 truck equivalent to the Horch type 1 / 801 / 70 utility types. All enjoyed use as tow vehicles for the 2cm flak guns.
While the Flak 38 did get to north Africa and the DAK, the Flak 30 was more the common weapon early in the N. Africa campaign.
There are actually a few builds out around the Web of Steyr with Flak 38 in tow, and there are a FEW pictures of this arrangement to be seen, if you search around!
So, as far as I can see and tell you, you are GOOD TO GO with this!
PS: I have one of these Tamiya Steyr kits - and actually plan on doing some sort of field-conversion gun-truck with a Flak 38 mounted on top... there were those things, too!

Thank you, Bob!
I´ll start to build next weekend and maybe I´ll post some in advance photos.
BTW, there is a web I´ve found while browsing for info about my build. Is this the Steyr conversion you´re planning?

It´s in Spanish but the pictures speaks for themselves. Nacho, the modeler, scratches all the conversion, a real fine work.
Hope it helps and thanks again, Bob.

Raul;
I'll be watching for your dio!
That flak truck build you forwarded is pretty cool - there is a resin kit - used in that build - for doing this "formal conversion". One adds on his Dragon 3cm Flak 103/38 "Jaboschreck" kit to complete the ensemble, as pictured.
I am not so much thinking of that version, but rather of working up a more informal "field conversion" using a 2cm Flak 38 mounted onto the back portion of the Steyr in the similar manner to how various "Flak trucks" were created by the Germans in all theaters using the Horch car. Not, you understand, that I have either any good pictures for this idea nor made any technical plan or design for how it might go!
I'm sure you have seen various iterations of Horch-based flak-trucks around - several great builds have been posted over the years and one is currently being developed elsewhere on Armorama - it's a favorite passion of mine, and I built one last year based on that Tamiya Horch (nice, but a bit long-in-tooth and needy of detail help) and a rather AMS'd Tamiya Flak 38 kit. I had loads and loads of fun with the Horch conversion - did all sorts of major scratch work (windshield assembly, vinyl windows, taunau cover and frames, gun-deck, lamps and mounts and steps and inside stuff and lots of bits around that gun), added a metal barrel (RB), tried some painting techniques, and feel pretty happy with the outcome!
I'm sort of thinking a Steyr version along similar route - again I don't yet have any photos to lead there, but...
Here's my "Horch DAK gun-truck of 1942":
Cheers!

Hi, Bob
Love your Horch, great job and nice weathering. And yes! It´s a DAK vehicle, I´m big a fan of those.
I remember one of my first conversions was a Flack 38 (Tamiya) on an Opel Maultier (Italeri), basic kits, lots of detailing work, but a lot of fun too. Unfortunately I´ve got no photos (pre digital era for this one) and the model was given to a friend.
About the Steyr article linked, the modeler cannot afford the resin kit so he scratchbuild the parts using the resin conversion instructions as reference. At least that’s what he wrote in the article.
I´ll start the build this weekend. I´m going to my country side house where I can find peace and quiet to build, those are much needed here in Buenos Aires in week days…uffff
I´ll be offline since there is no internet connection in the country (more peace of mind) so next week I´ll post some photos I hope.
See you then.
