Guys
New to these forums, but been doing a bit of searching on the above subject and have noticed a number of inaccurate posts on the above subject. During WW2 their were essentially two types of Royal Marines. Lets call them Ships Marines and Commandos
The guys on board battleships manning the "X" Turrets, drivers tankies etc were NOT commando trained and therefor wore the Dark Blue Beret with a red patch (as worn today by RM recruits)
Commando trained infantry who had passed through Achnacarry Castle as of Oct 1942 wore the Green Beret forever more associated with British Commandos.
At the end of WW2 the Army Commandos were disbanded, only leaving RM Commandos to carry on the name.
Recently Army Commando flashes have appeared as more Army guys do the All Arms Commando course (8 weeks as opposed to the 32 weeks RM Training)
So to sum up, all those guys painting RM ASG Centaurs and Shermans the Crew (driver was RAC not marines) should wear a blue beret
Hope this is of some help
