Any ideas on producing a peeling paint effect on a tank. Idea is a tank that has been repainted a second colour and then has sat and part of the weathering(rust, dirt, grime etc) is the top coat peeling/ cracking.

i have had success using Vallejo Crackle Medium to make a distressed/peeling effect in 1/35th scale.

it does involve some planning of how the piece will get painted but it works really well and i would like to use it again.

the door was done with crackle medium:

hard to see in the pics but unlike hairspray techniques this crackle effect has dimension to it with the paint cracking and peeling (which can be pumped up with the addition of washes).

if you go extreme with the crackling it is really making the paint peel which can be chipped off quite easily so seal it with Dullcote or something to keep it in its final state of half peeled away.
