Served in A Co. 1/102 Armor, 50AD NJARNG from 1987-1993. Started on M48a5 and moved to M60a3 before I left service. Was wondering what tanks were used by NJARNG before the M48a5. Also wondering what tanks were used by other ARNG units from 1975 on and what the transition dates were between types. I know some units had slick m60, some m60a1, m48a5 etc.

I'm interested in:
26th ID (MAARNG)
28th ID (PAARNG)
38th ID (INARNG)
40th ID (CAARNG)
42nd ID (NYARNG)
47th ID (MIARNG)
49th AD (TXARNG)
50th AD (NJARNG)
30th Ar Bde (TNARNG)
30th In Bde (NCARNG)
31st Ar Bde (ALARNG)
32nd In bde (WIARNG)
48th In Bde (GAARNG)
67th In Bde (NEARNG)
81st In Bde (WAARNG)
155th Ar Bde (MSARNG)
157th In Bde (PAARNG)
218th In Bde (SCARNG)

42nd ID also had the VT Guard at that time I believe, 172nd Armor (now the 172nd RSTA CAV) They still have examples of the 48A5's, 60's, and M1's up at Camp Johnson in Burlington Vermont. VT loved their tanks, might be a good place to start.

30th SAB, TNARNG, in the early 80's, were equipped with M48A5's, just as the 278th ACR, TNARNG, was. 278th ACR transitioned to M60A3's in 1986 as we moved to the Division 86 concept. 30th SAB probably followed the next year.

Dave:

A Co was in washington on rt 57 next to the state police barracks. it's still there, i pass it every now and again.

HHC was in P'burg I think, other co's were in Flemington and Hackettstown.

I went to Basic and AIT with Lt Kaufmann, I think he wound up a Col. Used to pal around with Lt Laverty, Paul Wilcox, Rusty Armstrong etc etc.

I was in the 157th! Back in 82 I think it was. I was a 45 Kilo Tank Turret Reparman in a unit with no tanks. Pretty much did nothing for about two years until I re-enlisted full time army. I think we were in Freemont PA??? Could be wrong but that sounds like it. I lived in Philly and had to travel a ways to the unit.

Way back in 1989 I was in the 30IN BDE NCNG while still in high school. Amazing huh! I was in C 1/252AR as a 19E's where we had M60A3's. All in the same year we got M1IP's and we became 19K's. I then got smart graduated HS and joined the real ARMY.

Small world, I was in B compaany out of Bound Brook, from 1982 until 2003. The company changed 3 times and we moved from Bound Brook to Somerset but we stayed the same. B 1/102, D 5/102 and A 2/102. I knew Kaufman as a PLT Leader and XO. I got off active duty M60A1s to the 48s and finished on the M1s. This is a picture of my tank at Drum. You guys remember SGT Major Dooley?

Oh yes I remember Sgt Decker he was the scout platoon Sergeant. Last time I saw him was in Fort Bliss while they were training for Iraq it was First Sergeant Decker. I retired but one of my workers put me in for Boss Lift went to see the guys in Fort Bliss. What about Major Mahon who was Col. Mahon last time I saw him.

All units of 40th ID had M48A3s until 1982, when they were converted to M48A5. My battlion 1/185th Armor was converted between Dec 82 and April 83. 1st Bde was all converted by Gallent Eagle '83. I know The entire division was A5's by May of '84, as the entire division was at AT over a 3 week period, all 20K soldiers.
