Must be "homemade"by te Irakis. I do not recognize the turret at all. The marking seems Brittish to me.

Not too sure about the marking, but it is a captured Iranian M36.

Guys,

I was reading one of the 4ID Unit Publications and they were referencing the "Iraqi Armor Museum". One of the mentioned piece was a M-36 with the Iraqi roundal on it.

This may be the one!

Has been confirmed as an M36 Jackson

Interesting it ended up in Iraq! There is also a Lorraine-Schlepper SP Gun, outside our HQ in Basra. I do have some other views of the M36, which I will add to that webshots page later today

Edit, have now added other views to my Armorama gallery

Regards

Tony

I don't agree: it's single baffled, which the Pzkw 4 isn't, and the cooling sleeve is not present on the pz4

the gun looks a little skinny to be in there look at the gap in tne mantlet may be from a pz4
from syria as they used them into the 60's might be a mod they carried out but look at the tracks on the M36 are they from a churchill?

I also wondered about thew tracks. But my knowledge of sherman tracks is not big enough to try to comment on it. I'm to humble for that!

I don't think they are Sherman tracks either. Look like some type of British (Commonwealth) tracks. I am starting to think this whole thing was cobbled together out of spare parts. Maybe these guys are planning on joining the T2K campaign...

The vehicle is an M36, I'm sitting here comparing photos of M36s and the gun is that of an M36, the only difference is a slightly modified muzzle brake. The welded items on the hull are curious though...what were they attachment points for some kind of bolt-on up-armour conversion. The track looks about right as well, now those welded items..... Jim

The gun appears to be a 90 MM ,M3 A1 with the bre evacuator forward, sigle baffle muzzle brake.

Gentlemen, after looking and re-looking at this vehicle, it is definitely an M36 Jackson minus the track-type which is unknown by me ??
The gun is facing toward the rear of the tank, which is why when looking at it earlier it looked too short to be an original type (T19) M3A1. It is an original gun, although this gun uses a modified, larger muzzle brake like Jimbrea said.
The hull of this tank is that of the M10 TD. The large "bolt-like" attachment points were originally there for adding appliqué armor. This armor was never used in combat. (at least I have never seen any, and believe me, I've looked)
The reason for this configuration was the allies' need for a larger gunned tank to combat the thicker armored German tanks. The turret was made specifically for the the T19 90mm gun, which was than designated the M3. The adding of the extractor made it the M3A1 90mm gun.
When this turret was mounted on an M10's hull, it was designated M36 (nicknamed Jackson). When it was mounted to an M4's hull it was designated M36B1. (M4 hulls were used because of their relative large supply and because the M10's hull was limited)
The Iranians came to possess the M36 somewhere in the late 40's early 50's. They received 32 of them. For why, I do not know. The Iraqis captured these tanks from the Iranians during the Iran Iraq war.

Of further interest with this particular vehicle is the mixed road wheels. If you look at the third or rear most (right side) bogie unit's road wheels, you'll notice the "dished" type wheel among the "pressed" type. Cool!
