As far as I know, they were painted the same color as the vehicle. No reason to present a target.

Conclusively, from their intorduction in 1937 until February 18, 1943, they were dunkelgrau. From then on ,they were dunkelgelb. Water cans had a white cross all the way around the can. There are some rare but original examples in Field Gray, and the Tropen colors, Grunbraun or Gelbbraun. Again, water cans had the white cross all the way around the can.
