DJ: I've airbrushed dirt color straight on toward the tread, then painted/drybrushed the tops of the treads black, grey, etc. I've also painted directly into the tread grooves on WW2 style tires with a small brush. HTH.

I use pigments, like by Mig Productions or AK Interactive.
You could use ground up colored chalk, mix it with alcohol and fix it into the treads

Does the alcohol turn the chalk into paste and make it adhere better?
What about the pigments? What would one mix with it to get the same results?

Pigments can be fixed with thinner or alcohol, depending on what kind of coat you are applying them on.

I mix pigments with water, making a paste, I then use an old brush and coat the tire, pushing the paste into the tread. After it dries, I use my finger to remove all but what is in the tread. Once this is done, I use Testor Flat, in the bottle and airbrush on LIGHT coats to seal it in. I might even dry brush a little light tire color after just to hightlight the tread, depending on the effect I am going for.
Hope that helps.

Thanks Anthony & Kevin for the advice as I will try them both on an upcoming Campaign I want to enter. Hopefully I will be building a Buffalo and I gotta know how to make the tires look like everyone else's.

Jeff I used a mix of pigments, earth effects AK wash.
On the Constructive Feedback forum you can see the results I applied on my 221 Bronco kit.

I'm glad you brought up the question for I probably would have never found it and I need this so badly for my future Buffalo build, so really ... I thank YOU!
