Good Morning,

Almost every source on the 1973 October/Yom Kippur war indicates that the IDF Centurions that fought on the Golan Heights were predominantly Sho't Cal versions, but that the IDF had some Centurions with the Meteor Engine (Sho'ts) still in service. There are pictures of these Sho'ts in the photographic record, but they look exclusively like Mk.8 tanks (with the big rear end/extra fuel tank and louvered engine deck).
Were any of the reserve tanks that served in the battle older Mk. 5 Meteor engine tanks? I know that, if they were, they would have been most certainly up-gunned to the L7 and stripped of the smoke launchers in the turret, much like the Sho’t Cals and the images of the Sho’t Meteor Mk. 8 tanks I have found on the Golan.
Any help would be appreciated, especially if someone can direct me to a photograph confirming this possibility.
Thanks!

I'll see what I an dig up from my collection when I get home, but I think you may be right - I seem to recall most of them with the Mk 8 hull, and actually added the extension (reversed angle) to one of the hulls.

The Meteor Shot's on the Golan were Mk. 3 and 5's. They had the rear hull fuel tank extension, cooling louvres on the rear deck, L7 105 etc..
