I got my .50 cal spent shells from Mission Models. They used to sell both spent and live .50 cal shells. Here are some reviews:

You can also cut 0.020 brass rod to a lenth of 3mm to replicate them as well. In 1/35 scale, the brass sets above look like just pieces of rod anyways. They are really small.

Personally I don't care for the brass rod look. Mission's casings are outstanding, but you don't get enough of them.
A few months ago I found extremely fine brass tubing in different sizes, that all telescope inside one another. Of course I took my calipers, and measured the larger and smaller diameters on the real casings (you have to average them out as they do taper a bit) and after scaling down the measurements, bought the two corresponding sizes I needed. All you need is a Dremel cutting disc to cut down the pieces to the correct size and insert one into the other. They actually have holes on the smaller end and look far better than rod. On the rear of the casing you can insert a short piece of brass rod to fill it in. Steel or solder might even look better but I did not get around to trying that yet. I"m still not home yet, but if I remember when I get home I'll post photos.

Wow Rob! You must have found brass tube for medical applications or capillary tubes for electronics? The dimensions I get in 1/35 scale for BMG (brass only) work out in inches to like...
Outer diamlength
0.0160 0.0225 neck
0.0230 0.0902 base
0.1127 total length and the holes are tiny!
Would you please share your brass supplier sources?
Thanks. PS Your CD series with photos are great stuff! Everyone should order

OK....either way rod or purchased you can get casings. For every casing you have a link. The links are a pita. any thoughts besides the old Mission Models PE.

Can't answer for Rob, but you can take a look at Albion Alloys (UK) range. Sprue Brothers, among others, sell their stuff.

I use a similar technique as I do for the casings, pieces of rod cut to 1mm lengths. In this case, I use 0.020 plastic rod painted a dark steel color.
Here is an example of them. I think it looks convincing enough to give you the idea of casings and links.

Thanks Frenchy....looks interesting
Gino, I agree with your process, most times modelers forget the links. They are almost as big a pile as the brass.
