i will be working on a german paratrooper soon, but i need to know what colors would have been on the uniform.
i really hate mixing colors, but i will if needed. i would prefer to use something straight out of the bottle. What model master colors would be the best?

One of Vallejo's Panzer Aces sets includes the splinter camo uniform colors. No need to custom mix and by all accounts some of the best paint you can get.

I was able to get my hands on the specific vellejo colors for this. The colors seem a little off, but I may be able to do something to fix. http://mmg.photobucket.com/albumview/albums/masterorion/photobucket-12087-1337816567762.jpg.html?o=0

here is the pic. im not really sure how much i like how it is turning out. im using all of the vallejo colors that they have for the splinter camo, but it just doenst look right to me. the green is too bright and the base seems too gray.
The gray may come out better once the splinter is added. i have a feeling i may end up having to apply multiple types of washes to get it to look correct....thoughts are welcom

Jesse,
You can't go wrong following Andy Evans' SBS and information here:
Historicus Forma::Dragon Fallschirmjager
And here:
Historicus Forma::Painting Splinter Pattern
Good luck. The work is tedious but worth the results if done well!

Mike, I really ought to be paying you a commission for all the referrals to my article you give out !! - Thankyou.
Jesse, don't panic - that is looking fine. Just be careful to keep the splinter edges sharp.
As I state in the article, when you add the chocolate brown wash/filter it will start to look less toy-like. Also you will notice a massive colour change when the raindrops are added so do not be too concerned by the harshness of the base colour at this stage.
Give me a shout if you need additional help and I am glad you find the tutorial useful.

thanks for the reply. now that im a bit further in the stages, its starting to look better. i went against the suggestion on your tuturial and have been pretty much replicating the pattern. This is a 200mm figure, so replicating the shape is not as viable. of course, there is a little bit of artistic licensing being applied.
i figured with adding the splinters, the color of the gray will almost look green. the only thing that concerns me is the filter that will be applied. as i have done many tanks, i have a feeling that adding a brown filter to the whole model may darken the brown blotches further. what do you think? i may do two filters. a brown on the gray and green and a lighter filter for the brown.

Hi Jesse,
You could do that but remember that you will be highlighting the brown (and green) with the original colours after the wash/filter is applied and this will tend to bring the tones back. Again, once they are highlighted with sunny skintone the colours will start to revive even further.
The filter only serves to blend the harshness of the colours together a bit. Imagine you are painting a vehicle, you start off with a lighter shade of the base colours because the washes and weathering will darken it down to the shade you want, it's the same principle. Also the raindrops will give the smock a greenish tone.
It looks like you have used the Panzer Aces splinter colours. I find these a little "off", give my colour mixes a try on a scrap figure(apart from the base colour they are all out of the bottle with no mixing).
HTH, and keep that filter very dilute !

the one problem i have run in to with the paints is that vallejo is limited in my area. there are litterally only a couple colors that are available to me because the store i get them from is a board game/card game store that also deals with the large board/stratgey games.
with a brown filter, the green should tone down pretty significantly. if it doesnt, i can get it to by other means.
