hello,
i painted figures and an aircraft recently with acrylics only.Having no acrylic flat varnish paint i opted for a humbrol enamel flat "matt cote" bottle i had from the past.to my surprise nothing happened, the figures remained shiny as before and the plane looked the same to me.I applied twice humbrol "mat cote" to the black propeller and it remained shiny as well!!! whats wrong?

1. Humbrol "matte" dries satin, not dead flat.
2. The paint was not stirred enough to suspend the matte component in the carrier.

I have tried Tamiya acrylic flat, rattle can flat and MM(Testors) flat enamel. MM is the best of the three.

Hi
After a lot of testing I personally found that Xtracolor Matt Varnish in enamel gives me the best possible flat cote, I have however never used their acrylic version so cannot coment on that.
With the Humbrol version, I found it needs mixing for ages, even with an electric steerer and then it give a slight white bloom because they use pumice as the matte agent.

you are right about humbrol ,even after mixing for ages and even heating the bottle in water it does remain thick and leaves a faint white mist.It is notable. It also seems to "kill" the colors below in my opinion.I wait to see what valejo is like me when it finally arrives.MM is not available anymore in switzerland while i will check with my supplier the Xtracolor availability.
