Hi Guys
I'm making in 1/35 scale a Sdkfz 222 from Tristar. I will reproduce a 222 into 20. Panzer Division in Russia , winter 1942.
The decals' kit of 20 Panzer Division are in white, but I read in others history book (for exemple Panzer Colours 2) the insigna was in yellow.
What is the correct version?
Thank you for yours response.
Regards
Mike

Mike;
Hi! Great-looking start / WIP on that -222!
20 PD insignia... Russia, "winter 1942"? Hmmmm. I think you may need to be a little more precise! IF it's to be "winter '41 - '42"... You can I think safely go with either yellow or white and either painted onto the straight dunkelgrau of the period. Many vehicles in 1941 still sported their insignia in the yellow often seen on the Poland and French campaign schemes. As Barbarossa rolled on and stuff got repainted, insignia became more commonly white.
As your 222 is going to be in winter, you do have the option of a whitewash overcoat of varying completeness in later 1941 - in which case, those markings would be left exposed on small dunkelgrau patches.
IF instead you are speaking of say DEC '42, so "winter '42 - '43", you should probably stick with white insignia. You would have some option of later '42 field-mods to the paint-scheme. Many vehicles had received field variations of gelb or of rotbraun or a green added over the regulation dunkelgrau still in effect at the time. While these were non-reg colors and applied in none-reg local patterns, there was a fair amount of non-gra camo going on Russia theatre vehicles in later 1942. The PD insignia may then either have remained in small dunkelgrau patches, or have been repainted on the prevailing coat. And of course, you still have whatever winter-wash job you are thinking of!
Hope this helps you some!
So what do you think of the Tristar kit? HobbyBoss, Bronco and Tristar all make "modern" kits of various of the -221 / 222 / 223 cars to follow up on those old but fun Tamiya versions out since 1970 or so. I have several of the HB and Bronco kits, and have built the HB 223 kit (really cool, super nice kit but full of significant errors!), but have never actually touched or seen the Tristar offering.
I'm looking forward to seeing whatever transpires from your fine start!

Unfortunately -with the type of turret view port config. Tristar severely limited the version of a 222 you can do. I have only found one photo with the parts in the box. And you need to add a few things like a Notek light guard and two small boxes on the front fenders -

Hi Bob
many many thanks for your response, it's very interesting.
I have print it for insert in my documentation.
At the end I have decide of realize a 222 in Grossdeutschland because the decals' kit are more correct.
I will reproduce a 222 in winter 42-43 on east front.
Bob, the kit is good but has some bad details, in particular the floor with no antislip.
The mounting of turret, radio and gun is very complicated!!
The istructions there are not clear......
many thaks for all

Mike;
Hey! Your winterized 222 is looking, well, COLD! I think you have created a great capture of that bit of leaving patches around the insignia - well-done! The camo looks great.
Yeah, as things go, it's indeed a small (model-making) world circling around these kits of these small cars! I had heard that the floor was lacking some of that detail. Well, at least it is pretty much hidden down inside the little beastie! The mount and turret are reputed to be quite nice. I am sure that they are complicated - heck, isn't that what makes these kits "great"? Complicated and complete portrayal of the complex real thing? I'd have to say it sounds like you got your money's - worth at that!
Nice job and I'm looking forward to seeing how it develops!

First of all let me say thank you for your kind words.
Your white wash paint job also looks cool, ( no pun intended.)
But your deductions are a bit incorrect. I can't get into it here right now but in the end, this is for fun right. Ciao for now.

Hi Bob
the old tamiya's kit is very easy and fast for mounting, this kit is completed of details and interiors, but more complicated to mounting.
Depending what do you want from the kit ........
I have assembled the old tamiya's 223 and this is the results:

I will if I get a chance, it's just I'm up to my tits right now doing stuff, (building, researching casting molds etc) on T-34s.

It's not that I don't want to but time is limited, which seems to shrink the longer I stay alive. But like I say I will if I get the opportunity.

Hi guys
Yesterday and today I'm work on my 222, I have sprayed a base coat in upper surface of 222 with vallejo color, for simulate the russian terrain in winter.
After this step I have prepared the mud with Mig pigment russian heart, polifylla, fine sand, white glue and water. The mud was applied with old brush on all lower chassis and fenders of my 222.
I have maked some signs in white on spare wheel cover.
Suggestions and criticism are welcome
bye bye
