Magnificent! And your statement about 1/35 scale models being too small for your eyesight and manual dexterity really hit home with me.

Please forgive me if I ask an extremely rude question, and bear in mind that I only do so as a complete newcomer to 1/16 scale. What would a project like this cost --- not merely the kit itself, but all the aesthetic upgrades you list in your first post here?

I trust many other Armorama patrons will understand when I say that my spouse, truly the light of my life, may take some gentle convincing that this is a reasonable expenditure on my part!

I was lucky with mine, I bought the tank second hand for £350 ($550). A brand new kit will set you back a lot more. Your best bet is to look on ebay for a cheap one, they come up quite often. If you want to go for full RC, you'll need the batteries, radio gear etc as Jeff said which will add up, but if you only want a static model, you can sell the electronics on and make most of your money back.
This is my 5th 1/16 scale Tamiya and to get them super-detailed to the level I like and add all the functions usually costs about £1500-2000 ($2350-3100)depending on the price of the kit and which tank it is. I do tend to add a lot of upgrade parts though and a ton of photo-etch which all bump up the price, the metal tracks alone can increase the price drastically! Check out the site ETO Armor to give you an indea of upgrade prices.
A tank like a Tiger has a lot more upgrade parts, but the Panzer IV only has a few available. I do have a Tiger to do next, and I plan to go whole hog on it.

Thanks for the comments, I do love these large scale builds, and the Jagdpanther has been on my 'must build' list for a while.
You'll see a whole lot more posts coming soon!

A small update for this morning, hopefully I should have a bit more to show next week. I'm waiting on reference books so I can carry on.

I want to finish the lower hull detail first so I can then fit the wheels and tracks. To this end I have started countersinking all the screws;

These will be filled in with milliput and sanded smooth. It'll give me a good surface to put the side and bottom detail on and hide the ugly screws. I know that all this detail will be invisible once the running gear is on, but I want to go all out on this one!

Sorry for the lack of updates on this one, I just haven't been able to work on it for a while. I'm currently waiting on a copy of Panzer Tracts to arrive from the US so I can get good drawings to scratch build the underside access hatches and bump stops.
I've also done enough research to find out that Tamiya based their Jagdpanther on what appears to be a very late model G2 variant. I'm adjusting my build accordingly, and will likely focus it on either the end of the Ardennes Offensive, or possibly the fighting in the Ruhr Pocket, but it may just be a random Jagdpanther from early 1945 anywhere in Germany!
Could a mod please update the title of my thread to reflect this please?

Im still debating camo schemes. I have found Vallejo now do primers in Dunklegelb! So that'll save me some time, lol.
I prefer a yellow based camo scheme, as green based look too dark to me. Any suggestions?

I apologise for the long delay between updates, sometimes a project just goes on hold for a while.
I do now have some bits to show you!

Hull underside

I have finally finished countersinking all the hull screws and filling them. I used a sheet of styrene over the underside to smooth it out, and added the hull access plates. I haven't added the bolt head detail, as it won't be visible and the weathering would obscure it.

I have also added the 'track pin knocker' and the shock absorber mounts on the side. I am undecided on the bump stops now as they won't be seen and may just fall off during running. I still may change my mind though.

I have also improved the detail on the sprocket covers, and added the welds.

More to come!

Roof detail

I wanted to add some visual interest to the roof, so I cut out and moved the commander's and rear periscopes. I also added the attachment points for the armoured vent cover.

Engine deck & hatch

I have attached my first piece of photo-etch, the grills. You can also see the detailing on the functional engine hatch.

As its functional, I detailed the underside of the hatch as well.

Thats all for now, but the underside is pretty much finished. I'll stick a coat of primer on it tomorrow, then I can start fitting the electronics and running gear again.
Then all the photo-etch detail parts will be going on, as well as a pair of Flammevernichter exhausts!
I also have a lovely Maybach to put under the engine hatch!

I apologise for the delay in updates, RL has been getting in the way of my modelling time. I'm trying to change my uni course to archaeology, which requires a silly amount of time to do! 8O
Anyway, here is some new pictures!

Engine Deck

Here's a quick overview of the engine deck changes. As you can see, a fair bit has changed since the last update.
The mesh screens have been added (and will receive some battle damage soon!) and there is finally an engine hatch back on!

I added the barrel cleaning rod tube to the rear, and mounted it on stands. It's a bit higher than some, but it adds some variation.
I have also left the crowbar mounts on. I've not seen it in photos, but I thought it would look good and cant see why crews wouldn't want the long crowbar.

I have changed the fuel filler cap for a smaller one and moved it forward, as it was on later Jagdpanthers. I also added the small square covers and the screw holes on the caps.
In this picture you can also see the air vent has been changed to the 4 bolt type. There are also some of the tool mount parts on, but i'm leaving the clips till later. They wont be functional, it's too much hassle, lol.

The Engine hatch is fitted and functional. I added a shot to show the underside detail completed. Painted in hull red with some oil stains, it should look good!

Mantlet

I have painted behind and on the back of the mantlet so it can be fitted in place. The Schumo mantlet is a fantastic piece, and adds to any Jagdpanther. You can also see I have added the washers to the cone bolts on the top row. I have also simulated the washers on the lower row as well.

Rear Plate

I have been working on the rear plate too. I have added flammevernichter exhausts which will be functional smoking ones once I get the smoke unit fitted. The Aber tool boxes are on, and need a little bit of work on the clips. The tow bar mounts are in and the starter holder on the right exhaust.

Small Details

The spare track hangers are on with the pins and chains fitted too.

The tow cable mounts are on too, but just need some welds now.

The jack block holder is also on. It's a bit fragile, but should be stronger with the block in. I just need to fabricate one from some basswood.

Lastly, a quick overview shot;

I'm getting a lot closer to the painting stage now. It's mostly tool mounts, some internal electronics and a few welds.
I'll post some more soon hopefully!

Cheers,
Rik

Great model and its is going to look fantastic.

A quick word on price and value for money. I have both 1/16 Tamyia motorised King Tiger and the 1/16th Trumpter static model. The Tamyia kit was £600 and the Trumpter was £200. In my opinion the Trumpter kit is far superior in every way to the Tamyia offering which is based on a much older kit from the 1980's.

If you want a great introduction to the world of 1/16th modling get the trumpter kit, I really wish I had two of them and the extra £400 rather than the Tamyia

Thank you very much for the wise words, and I'm grateful for the sound advice.

When I left military models 30 years ago, Tamiya was the best producer in existence, hands down. So very much has changed since then --- much of it a quantum improvement in quality (and, yes, also expense and complexity). Armorama is a great showcase for all that, and a great place to enter (or re-enter) a great hobby.

Fantastic work Rik, it's really looking the part now. Looking forward to seeing paint on this one. Are you still going to use that maybach engine?

Looking at your build is the kick I need to get back to my king tiger!

I wholeheartedly agree. If you want a 1/16 static model go for the Trumpeter King Tiger. You can still add loads of aftermarket parts and the details is amazing.
For me though, if I build something this big I want it to be RC and have as many functions as possible. Mine has all the sound, recoil, moving MG ball, exhaust smoke, moving main gun sight and many more features, which I think add to the effect.

Thanks Matt. I am indeed going to use the Maybach, but i'm going to wait to fit it until after i've done the main painting.
How's the KT coming along?

Hello .....
It will be a beautiful Jagdpanther ... Maybe a little help.
I have found from my friends from the East such a thing ... It may be useful to someone ....
In this model, a large medical syringe welding best to succeed ....

I need to quit looking at this thread or I'll want to build the one kit I have! I'm stealing the electronics out of it for my Elefant build.

I'm starting to think it's the wrong move after seeing this but I am finishing up a Panther so you can see why.

Keep up with the great work! Too detailed for me!

After seeing this and the "Hot Rod King Tiger" in Model of the Month, I want to do a 1/16th! But I've got lots of other stuff to do still.

One question, how'd you make the casting numbers? They all look fairly similar so I'm assuming their from some sort of detail set?

Can't wait to see more of the build!
