Hi, I'm looking to get a late war era King Tiger in 1/35, just wondering if there are any kits that are highly suggested & if there's any to avoid. It'll be my first KT, so I don't want something ridiculously complex. At least not yet
Any suggestions would be great

Hi Conor,
You will find quite a few King Tigers to choose from.
Just my opinion I like these 4 best;
Tamiya # 35164 and # 35165
Dragon # 6302 and # 6303.
hope this helps,

Hi Conor,
As Bill said, go with a dragon kit. The tamiya kits are rather dated now and no where near as good as dragon. Which kit you need depends on what you would class as a late era king tiger as production details changed throughout production. If you could give us a time frame or particular tank/unit you would like to build we can point you to the right kit.
Cheers

Hi Conor,
I´m glad you asked and not I.
Is it for the "Build a photo 2" campaign? Mine is and I chose
this:
Dragon 6208.
it looks simple enough and should fit the late ´44 era.
If not, one could make a few subtle changes. After all who
builds OOTB nowadays?

For a late KT without any doubt DML 6254 or 6232. The only difference between them beside included figures are tracks so you may want to be precise about that from the beginning.

Looks like Dragon is the way to go. My KT is going to be thrown into a winter 44-45 diorama in Hungary, I'm not too knowledgeable about units in there in that era, so any advice and tips would help.
Pawel: Which Tiger has the figures & which has the different tracks?
Paul: Nope this will be my own adventure. I'm getting a Ferdinand for the Modeling a Photo campaign

If it's Hungary 44-45 you should go with the 6254 which has the most standard battle tracks (the 6232 has the last model single link tracks seen only on a few vehicles). The figures of the 6254 will not be much of use as they are the falshmijager (German paras). The units in Hungary at this time (those using Tiger B) would be the 503rd Schwere Panzer Abteilung (heavy tank regiment) renamed in January to Schwere Panzer-Abteilung Feldherrnhalle (sPzABt.FHH,) and also the 509th.

Would 6232 still work for Hungary? I only ask because 6254 is selling for $85 dollars Thanks for the picture & info, that should help. The diorama I'm going for is pretty straightforward. I'm going to have two Panther's advancing behind a disabled StuG IV, and if all goes well, I'm going to put a KT in there as the gem of the scene, with infantry scattered all about it. I've seen plenty of photo's of all those vehicles in Hungary, so I'm guessing it's a reasonable scene.
Thanks again

Edit: I just found 6662 by Cyber Hobby. It's the The Black Knight series, but it's got the tracks you mentioned * it comes with Zimmerit. Only decals would pose a problem there...

Conor, The best kit for you would be 6303. The Tiger IIs in Hungry where part of Pz. abt 503 which was sent to Budapest in September 1944. Most, if not all of their Tiger IIs had zimmerit. You could also use kit 6302 as this unit is know to have had at least one 'Porsche turret' still in use. You could also use kits 6208 & 6312 and add zimmerit yourself.

Hi, I'm looking to get a late war era King Tiger in 1/35,
Is there any other kind? It entered service in 1944, considering the war started in 1939 and ended in 1945 I'd love to see an early or mid war one
Seriously, another vote here for DML. Tamiya were very good, especially when they came out, but no-one can touch DML now on any of the big cat panzers

Hi,
If you can get the Black Knight kit for a good price, it's probably your best option.
It's just the same contents as the 6254, but without the figures (which are pretty dated now anyway).
It has the 'standard' tracks and it comes without zimmerit.
Here:Black Knight KT
Both of which will be better for (and will increase your options) for a Hungary 44/45 Kingtiger.
Plus the Dragon zimmerit on their Kingtiger kits is pretty awful.
Kingtiger units in Hungary/Balaton - end'44/begin'45;
sPzAbt.509 all without zimmerit.
sSSPzAbt.501 all without zimmerit.
sPzAbt.503 some with/some without zimmerit.
Grant.
PS: the whitewashed '300' pic above is a 509 KT not a 503

Well that's good, I've been eyeing the Black Knight KT for a few days now. And 509's KTs didn't have zimmerit? That's great news, I'd probably ruin the tank trying to apply it on my own

And 509's KTs didn't have zimmerit?..
Definitely no zimmerit. All the 509 Kingtigers were issued in Dec'44, long after zimmerit had stopped being applied.
All their tanks were whitewashed when they first arrived in Hungary on the 15 Jan'45. This was later removed when the snow's melted.
So you have paint options also.
Coincidently, I built that very 509 300 pictured above sometime ago from a Dragon kit:

Was the white wash over a camo scheme or a factory color?
Great build btw

I have a Dragon 6312 Premium edition on the shelf that looks great... It has about 2 million pieces in the box, metal barrel, photo etch, individual tracks and much much more, even has an extra 1/2 turret for a choice... It looks great, but I keep pulling it off the shelf looking at it and then putting it back and doing something simpler... not ready to invest that much time yet...
I built the dragon ardenes one with the "ambush camo" and German Paratroopers sitting on tank (8 of them) that dragon did before I left the states and that was a great kit for sure too...

IMHO any DML King Tiger will build up quicker than a Pz III or IV of the same brand. King Tiger are really so simple. No difficult sub builds at all. You'll also see how many parts will stay in the box when the build is done.
Try one and you'll see.
