Does anyone know what the designation was for the International Harvester Paystar when it was used in the US military? I've seen them as 20-ton dump trucks, wreckers, & tractors; but I really can't find any information on them.

Thanks,
Jim

Looks like there was no "Mxxx" designation for these trucks :

You can find some TMs for the Dump truck variant here :

http://constructiondumptrucks.tpub.com/

The US Air Force had some Paystar trucks as well :

AFAIK, these trucks were built by AM General, not International Harvester/Navistar

Could easily be that they went without an Army type designator. This is not uncommon. Any equipment adopted by the US Army doesn't need one unless its determined that the equipment had to be modified for Army use or a designation is otherwise requested. The US military has a number of current Navistar Defense (previously International Military and Government) types in service without designations and the vast majority of MRAPs received no designations. In these cases, the commercial designation is used in the nomenclature, as noted on the cover of the TM that Frenchy posted.

Thanks for the help, guys. I appreciate it. Looks like these were used in the 1980s? Frenchy, you wouldn't happen to have the TM for the tractor, would you?

I'm pretty sure the M915 series was made by AM General, Crane Carrier Corp (CCC), and Freightliner, too.

The first M915 series trucks were built by Crane Carrier Co (AM General), then they were build by Freightliner.

Unfortunately, the dump truck variant is the only one I have found some TMs for...To say the truth, I'm still searching for pics showing other variants ...Are you sure they ever existed ?

According to Fred W. Crismon's US Military Wheeled Vehicles book, the first IHC F-5070 Dump trucks were acquired in 1973 and 700 were in service in 1978.

Frenchy, I'm pretty sure I saw a Paystar F5070 tractor used for tank recovery/heavy haul over on Hank's Truck Pictures. If I find it again I'll post the link. It might have just been a Paystar dump that someone purchased & converted.

Nige, well, that's the plan. I have a AMT Paystar mixer that I'm taking the mixer from & putting on a AMT/Ertl Mack DM600; so I needed something to do with the Paystar. Heavy haul tractor seemed appropriate, so I started snooping around Hank's; and that's when the idea hit me. I guess we'll just have to see how it progresses. Or not as the case may be.

Frenchy, here is that pic of the Paystar tractor:

The description doesn't help much:
"1991 International 6x6 Paystar 5000 Tractor with a Cummins engine and an 8 speed Roadranger."

However, from the other pics on the page, it is possible that this is a US Navy tractor.

Paystar Pics

Here are more: Ex-Military Vehicles. There is a Paystar dump that appears to have had a dump body added to it, but it's hard to tell.
