I think it depends on a couple of things- what is the fence made of? what destroyed it? Was it run over by a tank, burned down, or beaten up by the weather?

Other question about the fence... is it wood, brick, stone, or perhaps a combination?

Check out the Band of Brothers entitled Carentan - the fences were made out of wood, stone, iron and combinations. Also, check out your local library for books on D-Day and this should help.
