I have a few questions on the painting. I am new with the airbrush setup, I have a Paasche Dual action, siphon feed AB with compressor. I have noticed my paint has been rough textured and I sprayed Future also has been rough. I read with siphon feed AB, air should be 20 to 30 psi. Am I spraying with too much pressure, and or am not spraying correctly( maybe to much of an angle to the surface) any help on this would be great. Another question I have is, I am building the M48A2 Patton tank. I have the base coat of OD green(a little black added) have sprayed Future, added decals and sparayed 2nd coat of future. Now ready to weather, if I am using enamel paints to weather how many washes or filters should I apply, and should they be lighter each wash? I am trying to get techniques, seems there are many that I have read. Thanks Doug

You didn't state the distance your airbrush is from your model when you are spraying. It could be as simple as this, I noticed that I had the same problem because I was too far from the surface I was painting. The other problem I had was using low cost craft paints thinned with water. They didn't mix well and did not like being fed through an airbrush. I use a side feed dual-action and a siphon feed single action H model, both Paasche.

Hi Doug, and welcome to Armorama!
The rough surface you are experiencing is called pebbling. It happens when the paint partially dries in the air on the way to the model. To prevent this, move closer to the model, and drop your pressure to 20 PSI or lower if you can.
For guidance on weathering, I suggest you read the topic "Finishing and Weathering Sequence" at the top of this forum.
Then, feel free to ask questions! You're in a good place.

I am holding AB about 6 to 8 inches, so sounds like a little closer would be better. I'll check out other weathering section also. Thanks

Another thing to consider is how much thinner you are adding to your paint. Rough finishes can also be caused by insufficiently thinned paint. Generally speaking, your paint should be thinned to about the consistency of low-fat milk.

With practice and experience, you can reduce your air pressure depending on how thin your paint is, the thinner the paint, the less air you need.

Yes, 6 to 8 inches is rattle can distance. You can get much closer with an airbrush. As long as you keep the airbrush moving and use your trigger to prevent runs, drips, or pooling, you can get 2 or 3 inches away even with a big airbrush like that.
