Return to armour building after 26 or so years out. Adding metal barrels (m/g and 20mm) but rest is oob. Building as 3rd Panzer division, 1941 in 2-tone dak. Scheme ral8000 and ral7008. Will add RB models barrels for both machine gun and main gun
ok photos
first off box & contents

and then progress - not too bad - the exhaust wanted to ping off but got it attached... rest went on easily (top is just slotted on - wont glue it until its all painted....

work suspended while I await my replacement barrels. Also going to add an aerial recognition panel (not a swastika but a cross) and a tarpaulin-type bundle just for a bit more interest.

This was the very first armour kit I ever did. I still have a soft spot for it. Great to see it still getting built.

its a nice kit - goes together well with scope for me to practice armour weathering
aerial recognition flag attempt 1.... need to tone down some of the highlights I think. Painted in oil paint (may look less fake once the tank itself is painted)

I know it should be a swastika but this is a compromise.....
PS - is it me or is it too big??? I have seen photos with smaller flags draped over the rear of the turret but also on the rear engine deck.... will see (now I know how to do it I can repeat if needed)

trying flag #2 - this time printing the flag onto normal paper, cutting out, wetting with glue/water and moulding to the shape. I don't think it looks as "cloth-like" (doesn't drape as well) but the image of the cross looks better. Once dry I will then touch it up with my oil paints to give it a more natural appearance.
photos later

Nice work on that second flag. But next time work on that after you paint. I don't know if you can remove it in the mean time... Looks great...Welcome back.

first paint on - just grey primer mostly for barrels (look nice painted) and so I can see where I am painting the RAL800 which is so close to the bare plastic I dont think I could've seen where had been missed ;-)
also done the tracks - first go with the rubber kit ones, just a base coat of humbrol matt black enamel but seemed to take ok....

well RAL8000 (MM equivalent colour 2099 anyway) on... I can see why they changed the paint from 1942 - its the most un-sandy sand camo I have seen - more appropriate after an extra-hot curry.... photos later in the week (once the other RAL colour is added to 1/3 of the hull....)

looking good Robert. Very neat and tidy to say it's your first armor build in 26 years. For the tracks, weathering should sort out the starkness between the black and silver. Just add plently of dusty/light dirt tones with pigments or chalks. For the wear on the contact points I would suggest using a 4-6B pencil or a silver artists pencil as it will give a much better effect.
Just a though, did those metal barrels nearly cost the same as the kit?
Cheers
Matt

thanks for the tip - think I need to do a dilute coat all over of a darker steel too....
the barrels were about £1 less than the kit yes ;-) but i think they do make a difference (and I like them....)

well added the RAL7008 patches - looks OK and done the "steel" coat over the tracks - now they look toooooo fresh and shiny - but will weather them dusty, maybe a bit of grease? some light rust (not too heavy as its the desert and I believe the sand would keep a lot of it on the treads clean)
photos when I am happier with the finish(will do some progress shots for my records)

started the weathering with 3 colours applied by sponge... they were
1) dark grey
2) lighter RAL8000
3) lighter RAL7008
personally i think the effect looks better from a distance - fades the joins between the camo, dulls down and makes it look a "little" less toy like. For a first attempt its ok(ish)... Have some soft pastels for next - going to mix my own colours for sandy and look to apply.....

the grey "lid" on the LHS is to cook breakfast on.... found a video on youtube of a PzII in the desert - crew were frying eggs on that part and it was clean & dark - just went for a grey colour as couldn't see if it was base coat grey or bare metal (assume the latter).... just adds a touch of individuality...
as always, constructive criticism more than gratefully received

Excluding the C130 my parents made my grandad build for me(he bought it and I was 6), this was my first kit. I remember enjoying it. No where near as good as yours. Great kit for a vignette or by its self. The air recognition panel is a nice touch. The Wermacht and panzer divisions were not necessarily pro Hitler and it's good to see you went the right way with it.

Looking good there Rob. I've got one, but mine will be an SS operated vehicle.
I love half-tracks and Tiger tanks. And Lancaster bombers. I model to please myself not others. I may not be the best of modellers, but I'm happy with what I end up with.

Thanks for that. Not sure about a vignette at this stage, consideeing it for future builds. For the air rec panel, most were swastika and read no evidence of the atlernative cross being used, HOWEVER did see a snippet of film of SD.kfz 222 with rear I'd panels and they were balkenkreuz. They were in Greece but gives me a little glimmer that this may have happened....

Looking very nice! One small suggestion would be to paint the 2.0cm gun as gunmetal to match the MG34. These typically were swapped out on a regular basis (the vehicle carried spares on board routinely) and so weren't usually seen in the same basecoat color as the vehicle.

thanks for tha... any images of where they stored the spare barrel - could use the kit one (with drilled ends for "realism - or perhaps wrapped in tarp) to add some variation to my kit..... will have a look....

It was the national flag! I very much doubt anyone would put a cross instead of the svastika to express some kind of political statement.
This balkenkreuz looks weird on a white circle on a red flag, would be nice to see some evidence of it being used, like a video capture of the film mentioned.
Other than that a very nice built of a classic old Tamiya model.
Cheers,
Christophe

there are stories of it being used around but i have not found evidence... I am not making a political statement so will ditch it....
