What kind of vehicle would Jochen Pieper travelled in or likely travelled in during the Battle of the Bulge? Because of his rank, I doubt he would have rode in a tank. Would he have been inside 250 Neu or SPW 251 or maybe a Steyr 1500/a?

I believe that part of the way he rode in an sd.kfz 251 ausf D radio version of III/SS Panzer Grenadier Regiment 2. It was the command vehicle of Josef Diefenthal. I also read that he did use a Panther command tank as well as a captured jeep. I have yet to find actual photos of Peiper in the Bulge. Most of the photos that you see of him in books about the Bulge are from battles on the Eastern Front.

Phill,
The photo's you talk about are not of Jochen Peiper.
even they captions many times as being Jochen Peiper, it is believed to be Ochsner.

Belgian Tony,
You are correct. I have After the Battle's "Battle of the Bulge, Then and Now". (not read yet but flipped thru the pages and viewed all the photos). Page 157 has the famous picture (taken from a movie still) of three SS men riding a schwimmwagen at the Kaiserbaracke Crossroad. Their driver is unidentified but the two NCO ranks are Unterscharfurther Oschner and Persin. Joachim Pieper's rank was Obersturmbannfurher. Pieper was not anywhere near the location where the photo was taken. I have the Dragon figure set Kampfgruppe Pieper and I wanted to pose the figures next to a suitable command vehicle.
I am reading George Nipe's Blood Steel and Myth, (about the 2nd SS Pz Corps at the battle of Kursk) which mentions Pieper riding a 251 SPW.

The man was a commander that led from the front. Because of this,he hitched rides on a number of vehicles during the advance because his march column was miles long. When an event happened he would find out what was going on,make a command decision on how to deal with it and then get the units moving as quickly as possible because of his orders to get to the Mues river as fast as possible.
There are reports of him being in a Jeep briefly and also a M/C briefly but I think your safest bet would be the 251D/3 of either the PzRegt or III/2SS PzGrenRegt as he had to have commo with this giant single file column.
If you can wait a little, there is a new Duel In The Mist volume about to be released that will help you and if you are really into knowing about this part of the Bulge then I highly recommend the first two books in the series. Also,if you want to seriously upgrade your Peiper figgie,I suggest getting the version from Alpine as it is superb.

Thanks Jerry. I think that is a logical assumption. I have the first two volumes of Duel in the Mist (which I have not read yet because i am slowly reading George Nipe's Blood Steel and Myth).

I'm not sure Jochen Pieper took part in the Battle of the Bulge, but Joachim Peiper surely did

"Jochen" is the German diminutive of "Joachim", just as "Mike" is the English diminutive of "Michael".
Correct about the surname, though.
