No. It's meant to fool heat-seeking missiles. There aren't many of those in A'stan.
At least this is what I've been told.

ChiefGunner,
Bill is correct about the device description, and I also believe he is correct about them not being used in A-stan.
I'm pretty confident that Mike Mummey can confirm or deny this.
HTH.

Slightly incorrect. It wasn't meant to fool heat seeking missiles, it was a "dazzler", intended as a countermeasure against optically guided anti-tank missiles similar to a TOW.
They were standard during the initial Iraq invasion but given the lack of ATGM's present over there (thank goodness, BTW), they aren't mounted that often.

John,
Thank you for the correction.
As I understand, the ATGM Counter-Measures Device is used only by the USMC, even though it should be usable on any M1A1.

Thank you all, for the informations.
I want to do the USMC M1A1 in Afghanistan and for this I have:
- Dragon M1A1HA Abrams 1st Marine Tank Battalion, Baghdad 2003 (#3533);
- Order from, www.perfect-scale.de, the "M1A1 USMC Afghanistan" resin update set;
- Order from my hobby shop, workable tracks in plastic, I think, from Tumpeter;
In the near future the 120mm barrel in metal.
Does anyone know the unit of the M1A1, in this picture?
I donīt know the source of this picture, sorry.
Regards,
ChiefGunner

IIRC there is only one company of USMC M1A1s in A'stand: Delta Company, 1st Tank Battalion, 1st Marine Division (Forward). The configuration in that photo, the lack of markings and CID all say "Afghanistan" to me.

Hey Chief,
well, I'm a little late on this one but Bill is correctthe tank belongs to 1st TBN 1st marine division, delta co. (probably 3rd plt judjing by the three stripes of the 'monster energy M' but there is more than one company in afghanistan...
the PSM set supplies you with a bit more than what you'll need (e.g. the AN/VLQ-8 MCD and turret roof armor)
for the tank you want to depict you'll have to use the belly armor, late style TI phone, FO/AC antennas, BFT antenna, 50 cal. camera, belly armor, umbrella stand, gunner's shield, DUKE antennae USMC style smoke dischargers and the BRE from the PSM set
...and probably lots of 50 cal ammo boxes (again, check psm for that)
Djiti prod from france also have a great commander's figure for a-stan tanks
send me a pm if you have any more questions regarding Afghanistan M1's
Cheers, Max

LOL, ain't that just like Gyreens to make field mods and not pay attention to regs.
