Has anyone ever tried this with smaller scale armor yet? I've read about it on the larger scale forums and it looks fantastic.

Some people do use this to good effect on small scale armor although I haven't tried it myself. I would guess the process is the same but I imagine it is very easy to overdo it. I would suggest practicing on scrap kits or plastic card with different tools until you achieve chipping that is in scale.

Dear John: I haven't tried it either, so I'm not sure it's efective on small scale, but I'm sure it does efect on 1/48 or bigger . If you are stil wondering, I suggest you should use salt technique for chipping, or you can use a small piece of 'washing sponge', I used these on both large scale and 1/72 scale . An example: my 1/72 tank:

(you can see some chipping on the skirt plates )

Anyway, good luck with what you're building .

I've tried it on a 1/35 scale greyhound just a couple of months ago. The one major thing I learned after practicing on some scrap models I keep for things like this is to seal the base coat paint before appling the white coat. I also figured out that using a small paint brush gave me results like you see in wartime photos where the paint is streaked and runny. And finally, you can use all sorts of things to help remove the winter white until you achieve the desired look. I used an old toothbrush to wear away some of the paint and a bottlecap to put in some heavy scratches along the fenders. But practicing on a scrape peice before attacking the main subject is definitely the way to go.

Good luck.

Hi John.

Effectively it is very efective, like in 1:35 or 1:48. Some time ago I made a stug III in whitewash using this technique.

This is my last model, made in this days.

I hope this pictures can help you with your doubts.

Best regards. Pedro.

Wow guys, those are some impressive models. Thank you for sharing them. Now that I know that it will work, it's back to the bench! Got a 72nd scale M4A2 DV begging for the treatment as soon as it's out of the molds!

It has no more to do with scale than painting does.

I have started using it and have successfully done three models to date. The secret is to only wet a small area at a time and work on that. Here are my efforts so far...

Hope this helps you to have a go, it is well worth it.

All the best,

Paul

Whoa, nice builds Paul! Thank you for sharing them. Well, the motivation is there to continue, just have to get this resin line up and running.

Paint the model the desired color(base color) Once dry, apply a coat of hair spray, let it dry for about 15-30 mins, then apply another coat. Wait about 10 minutes then apply top coat. As soon as the paint dries, using a tooth brush (or other stiff brush) wet the area and soft start to remove paint.

Yes I have tried and I can tell you that it works very well indeed but as Paul says it must be done in small sections and one has to be careful not to make the chips to large so they will be out of scale...

Cheers

Sven-Åke

Here's an example of some extreme chipping.

An example of some lighter and more conservative chipping.

No, 1/35, I just wanted him to see result of hairspray method. Sorry I forgot what forum I was in.
