Do you put the dots on the vertical surfaces only, or can you put them on horizontal surfaces too?

Any tips are greatly appreciated!

They can be put any where as the effect simulates fading.This according to Mig Productions FAQ volume 1

On areas of the tank you can apply the dots. On horizontals blend them using a tapping motion or a swirling motion.
