Greatings Tim,
Another great modeling site that you ahve found!
Hey, for the beginer, there are a number of great books such as Shep Paines and Tony Greenland's books. both are available through mail order sites on the net.
As for a good start ont he Tiger, go over to Hobby Link Japan http://wwww.hlj.com and get any of the "Armour Modeling" magazines. They usually ahve a Tiger in the mix, and these are detailed in excellent detail.
Anyway, as these answers may not fullfill all of your questions, this site can be helpfull by just asking some more!
Have fun!

Tim,
First off, I'd like to welcome you the wonderful and sometime frustrating world of AFV modelling. Definitely pick up Shep Paine's "How to build tanks and Military vehicles" and Tony Greenland's "Panzer Modelling masterclass," both are well worth the money to get you started. Next, I'd recommend Squadron/Signal's book on the Tiger. It's relatively inexpensive (under US$10) and has a good selection of Tiger, Ferdinand/Elefant, Tiger II and Jagdtiger pictures, line drawings and color plates. Osprey puts out a book on both the Tiger I and II and are a little heavier on text than the Squadron books. From our friends in Japan, the Achtung Panzer Series has a book on the Tiger and contains incredibly detailed line drawings of the various fitting and parts of the vehicle. These books also contain numerous color pictures of preserved vehicles form around the world. The Achtung Panzer series is a little pricey (US$25-40) but are the ultimate modeller's books. Military Miniatures in Review is supposed to be releasing a book on modelling the Tiger and variants, but they're about a year-or-so late at this point. If it's anything like their Sherman book, it will be a treat. Last, I can't finish this discussion without mentioning the best free resource out there: the web. Do a couple of searches for Tiger I on a couple of search engines and I'm sure it will help. I hope that helps and isn't too overwhelming, remember, this is a hobby, have fun!
Regards,
Georg

Try this and similar.
I've always enjoyed Kalmbach publishing's modeling related books.
Its where I learned my first attempts at washing and dry brushing
(Pre Internet days, and live in the boonies around no IPMS chapters.)

I owned those two books about 10 years ago.
Lost them over the years but they were both great!
I think the military models one is the one where I learned about washes and drybrushes that I referred to in the earlier post I made on this thread.
Amazon has both, one of them takes forever for them to get, and ship to you.
The other one doesnt.
I just reordered both as a package set from them
I dont recommend that as I dont think I saved enough for it to be worth it.
I recommend you get them if they strike your fancy.

Timlo, any of those books are great references. If you are wanting to get ideas for paint schemes check out Squadron/Signal pubs 3 volume set Panzer Colors. The biggest issue for you should be which kit to build. Take a little time to research that out. When you decide to purchase a kit, check out a few websites such as discount HObbies and Great Models to get a good price. There are many great kits out there at varying price ranges. Tamiya, Academy, and Italerie all make good ones. Decide if you are ready to deal with Photo etch or aftermarket kits. Me, I 've built both the Tamiya and Academy kits, for a beginer, I would recommend the Tamiya with the photo etched rear deck screens (also by Tamiya)

Timio welcome to Armorama. Go for any book under the name of Sheperd Payne the guy is great understandable and helpful has many easy and effective techniques and also cheap and easy to find material. i own all of his book years now and they re treasure. If you could be able to suck everything thats in there you could use book like showcases as the Verlinden ones that will mostly give u ideas but will not explain much on how to build em. But Shep Payne has already told u how to do it!!!!!!! Anf of course goin to book stores and looking yourself at books will be helpfull to see which kind suits u more.
Concluding the 2 books from Shep Payne, will be your companion for many years on military modelling and dioraming !!!
hope u enjoy it

As the one gentleman advised, Shep Paine's is great and his books are as well.
Theyll help you get a great start, and give you way too many subject ideas.
You'll have your allowance spent in advance for years to come
