I'm planning on building the DF-12 ballistic missile launcher and need some reference photos. I only found a few on Google and Yahoo image search. None of them are close-ups. Is there a walk around available or will I have to trust in the box art and provided detail?

Hey Matt- I assume you mean the DF-21?

The only one I know that could be walked around is at a musuem in Beijing- that well known picture on Wikipedia that shows the front cab was taken at the musuem- I've been trying to find a decent walk-around myself but it seems like there isn't much out there.

These are the closest pics I've found thus far:

EDIT: The three I posted don't seem to be working, even when I got to the original link. Here it is- its the last three pictures on the page, maybe they will be visible to others as they are no longer to me for some strange reason:

http://bbs.tiexue.net/post_1799450_1.html

I hope these are a bit of help. I just wish someone would take more of the one in the museum. It would be helpful!

Thanks Karl. And, yes "12" was a typo. Maybe a mod will change it.

Thanks Frenchy. The first two and last two photos aren't showing up and I'm getting a "forbidden" message when I try the link.

Sometimes things can go wrong... Here's another link to a picture showing the new truck tractor :

That link works. I'm tirelessly searching for an interior photo of the cab.

More to come.

Karl: do you have the contact information for the museum? I doubt it would still be classified. I'll see if I can request some photographs.

Not the Dong Feng, but interesting.

A wealth of information, Frenchy.
Here are some more

Would the interior be basically the same as the MAZ? I suspect there would be a lot more electronics, but it should give a good reference for the basics.

Matt- some interesting links there- thanks for posting them. I found a German website where a guy has detailed the tank transporter version of the Hanyang Type 82, it might be of some use:

http://www.modellversium.de/galerie/22-militaer-fahrzeuge/2494-hanyang-hy473-962-trumpeter.html

Not the interior but this is supposedly a DF-21 in winter camo:

I still can't seem to find any interior pics!

I believe the museum with the DF-21 is called the 'Military Musuem of the Chinese People's Revolution'. Here is their web link in English:

http://eng.jb.mil.cn/

And in Chinese:

http://www.jb.mil.cn/

I would say that if you don't get any result in contacting them you could possibly try going through a Chinese embassy in the US, might be worth a try!

Thanks for re-posting that link Frency!

Talking about the cab interior, this truck is based on Japanese Mitsubishi (or Mitsubishi-Fuso) heavy trucks so I guess it may be visually closer to these trucks interior than to the Russian-built MAZ one...

IMHO, you can see the family likeness in the picture below :

Karl: Thanks for the link. I'll shoot them an email today.
Frenchy: I found that the MAZ 547 is the tractor used to haul the missile. It looks just like the tractor in other photos. I did run across the civilian version, but it does not appear to be the same. The console is different and I also found that most had been modified with things like ergonomic seats.
On a side note; would the PLA figures out now be sufficient to represent a parade during the Dong Feng's hay day?
It seems the only way to contact them is by calling or sending snail mail. As I don't have free international calling, snail mail will have to carry the day.

You mean the Bronco Parade figures or Dream Model set of three for vehicles? They are both supposed to be in digital camo so it wouldn't suit the DF-21's 'hayday' exactly- (by 'hayday' I take it that you mean when it first entered service back in the mid-90s?) However, the Strategic Missile Forces (or the Second Artillery as they call it) still have the DF-21's in service (about 80 of them) so the figures would actually be okay in their digital camo. If you want to back-date them to the late 90s or early 2000s then simply ditch the suggested digital camo and go for one of their regular style camo uniforms that were more common a few years ago. Incidentally Dream Model's set comes with some decent digital camo decals and insignia and they work pretty well.

I may go that route. I was referring to the Hobby Boss PLA on parade figures. Thought I would make a clean kit, for once.

Meant Bronco. I was considering buy a few sets and having them stand in front of or alongside the launcher.

Thats sounds cool- it would really show off the size of the missile.

That's what I was hoping for. It will also portray the missile as Chinese, rather than Soviet.
