First of all,excellent photo!! I have never seen this one before and believe me,I have seen a lot of pics already.
The object that you circled is a ammo pouch for the Machine Pistol. It does not have the shoulder straps attached so it is at an unusual angle and is also only partly full with magazines. It looks like he also may be wearing a custom made jacket. It could just be the picture though because it also could be the 1944 pattern 4 pocket twill jacket.
