I am a first time modeller and have a great interest in the Vietnam War so would like to make my first attempt on that theme. Can anyone point me in the direction of a good supplier of Vietnam era figures and vehicles preferably in the UK but if that isnt possible any internet site would be good

many thanks #:-)

Anzac -
Love your handle, Galipoli would be a good subject also, mate!

Anyway found a lot in the historical threads of the Diorama forum, re: 'Nam

Check this url:

One of them was a site of vets that posted their personal photos from the war.

it was cool
Check it out, welcome, and post pics of your work, for us!!!

Welcome to Armorama Anzac. We are very glad to see you here. The Vietnam era (US involvement) is my favorite subject also. What type of models from this era are you intgerested in most? Static displays or Dio's possiblities? Any way it is great to see you here as a new member. Enjoy

thanks for the welcome animal

mostly be working on dios. would like to do some with australian involvment but I would think that finding aussie figures from that era would be very hard to come by but you never know. I look forward to be getting stuck in and it appears i will get plenty of help and advice from other members here

Fantastic

That would be great to see some of the Aussies. We had a unit from Austrialia station at Cu Chi where I was assigned. It was an Aviation maintence unit. I had talked to a few Aussies who were in some of the convoys I was part of also.

Galipoli would be no picnic either Anzac !!!
(Course it wasnt easy for the Aussies and Kiwis either !)

I suggest a basic US centric Nam era dio to get you started and plugged in with the vendors that may help you find the necessary stuff as you specialize. For whatever its worth

Captain
That being the case, may I humbly request some pics in your gallery?
I hope to do a Vietnam dio one day, after I gain more experience.
I want to do an M113 scene.
My StepDad was 2nd Division - Hell On Wheels and whenever he went in for CQ to catch up paperwork, he'd drop me at the motor pool at Fort Knox or Fort Hood.
I'd climb all over the 113s and 48s, it was so much fun.

Yeah there was a LOT of First Cav at those forts also. LOTS.

I'd love to study other accomplished modelers work while I build my skills.
Regards

Hey man, if you want vietnam, then go with GUNTRUCKS! You can put tons of custominzation into them and still get the right look, and the great thing is that you can always go back and redo it and custom it even more. And to go with what you want, they were used infinatly in vietnam. I think it is the greatest thing for a beginer.

Thanks Guys for all the tips and help

I have decided to either go for either a "hot" dust off with the chopper in a village square (very similar to the scene in apocalypse now ) or a Khe Sanh artillary emplacment.
these might seem rather elaborate for a novice but i like a good challenge.
*right newbie question time*.i have trawled the net for figures and the only site i can find so far supplies 1/35 figures. if i was to use these will it cause a problem with vehicles etc ie will i have problems finding accessories for my dios in this scale.
so far everyone that has responded has pointed me in the right direction so i hope this will be the final push

many thanks for all that have answered

Welcome Anzac--I'm pretty new here myself--a modeling "retread" as it were. Anyway, "nam is my subject, too. Let me tell you that there is way more out there than I ever realized. Oh, you'll have to hunt for it a little, but it's doable. And I'll save you many hours of hunting: for figures, try Squadron.com, military models.com, megahobby.com, and model warehouse.com (they have ALL of the DML 'Nam series 1/35 figures). These same folks also have the planes, copters, boats and armor for that era. Verlinden makes a line of "Nam figures & accessories, too. I ran across one set of Aussie 'Nam figures a while back--I downloaded the photo for reference, but didn't note where I got it. If I run across it again, I'll let you know.
For research, go to Google, type in Vietnam War + photos, and stand back. There are a ton of cool websites dealing with the subject. I am interested in riverine warfare & found some interesting stuff my typing in "riverine warfare" in Google.
Hope this helps--and keep in touch via email if you need more info.

!/35 scale will work for most vehicles( tanks, trucks, etc), Verlinden makes many, many accesories in 1/35 scale. Some helicopters are made in !/35(MPC). I think there are two river patrol craft in 1/35. The only real problem is that aircraft are not made in 1/35. So just about any ground or water dio can be made for Nam in 1/35.Just my 2 cents worth
