Earlier this year, to commemorate 30 years since the Falklands conflict I built one of the 4 FV101 Scorpions to make it all the way to the South Atlantic and made such an important contribution to the land conflict.

My starting point was from two photos that depicted the vehicles of the Blues and Royals, this one:

which was included in the Osprey Scorpion book by Chris Foss and Simon Dunstan (and has some cracking nuggets of information) and positively identifies the Scorpion in the photo as 23A as is shown in this link to an except in Google Books

In addition I found another photo which also looks like it is 23A:

The kit is of course the AFV Club Scorpion and I used the Eduard Etch set plus the Fruilmodel tracks, plus figures and stowage accessories from Accurate Armour, heads from Hornet

So here goes:

Ex CoH (then) and now retired Major Paul Stretton was part of that troop and is now the secretary of the Household Cavalry association.
It is possible it was his mount.

You can contact him via the Regimental (H/Cav) Web site.

I am in Vegas for a few more days so I cannot supply the link but I am sure you can look it up..

No doubt he would be willing to give you some history on the troop vehicles.

Keith.

Thank you everyone, it was an enjoyable build and good practice for my subsequent Bar armoured Scimitar

Thanks for that info Keith, I'll check it out, would be interesting to hear from the commander of the vehicle I've modelled (if it was him)

Here you are mate, straight from the horses mouth as they say. (More info coming from my old friend later I hope).

Keith,

The commander is the late CoH Stu (Stewart) Thompson who sadly died of cancer a couple of months ago.

Having spoken to Gary Pilchowski who was the gunner, the reason there are no lights is because this was Stu's "husbandry" to ensure the driver did not inadvertently switch on any lights at any time; obviously Stu didn't wish to run the risk of his driver switching off "convoy" light only.

It wasn't a Troop or Sqn SOP;

I must admit I have seen headlights and indicators come on in troop hides when tired drivers have forgotten when either starting up or moving off but didn't feel the need to remove every bulb and light "just in case".

Regards Paul.

Thats what I'd read - it was an in field mod to avoid mistakes happening and makes sense. Thanks for that Keith, always interesting to hear from the men on the ground!
