M1A1 AIM fender question

I am building a USMC M1A1 AIM in Afghanistan using the PSM conversion and the Dragon AIM kit. The pictures of the tank I am bulding show the smooth fenders, not the ones with the X stamp. Can I just simply fill in the X and 2 of the three "slots" to get the smooth fender or are there more differences? I was just eyeballing the smooth ones in the SEP kit by looking at the directions

You can do just what you describe. They are basically the same except for the extra stiffening slots and X.
