I've always read that masking metalizers is hard to do because when applied the metalizer can't stand direct contact and likes to peel up when masked. So, in preparation for a 1/48 P-51D 'Old Crow' and a 1/32 P-47 Bubble in NMF, I picked up some metalizer and began experimenting. I also picked up a new product made from Rust-Oleum called "Plastic Primer". This primer is meant to be a base coat for painting plastic outdoor furniture so I thought, "models are made of plastic", and set out to make a NMF easier...at least easier than the metal foil abomination I had a couple of months ago...lol!
To make a long story short, I've had two successful applications of metalizer over the plastic primer with great success and an equaled amount of success of masking the metalizer with 3M Blue Painters Tape without pulling up the base coat of metalizer. Woohooo!
I think the key is letting the primer setup for at least 24 hours before applying the metalizer.
Just thought I would share that with everybody. Pictures soon.

I have done the NMF on the sabre, but not yet, tried any masking yet. Just wonder does future serves as a protecton for Alclad II as well?

I think alclad II doesn't require anything special to mask at all. Just apply the alclad, let dry and mask. None of the shops here stock alclad or I would try it too. It seems much easier to work with than the metalizers.

Hi All
I have just finished my first project using Alclad-2 (a P47D). And this is just marvelous stuff!
I haven't tried masking on it yet, but I feel sure it could handle low-tack taping. Spraying Future over alclad tends to dull it a bit. I think it just improves the look.
Happy Modeling!

NMF?
For painting a Sabre or a B-58, etc. in bare metal finish- which metalizer paint would be the best, and which color? (Steel, I assume?)
For All-Clad metalizers- do you need to use the All-clad thinner- as they recommend, or can you use mineral spirits/turpentine ?
thanks!

MM recomends using wet newspaper as a msking agent. Wet it, apply, let dry and paint. Has anybody done this?,

Done according to directions,Alclad should be sprayed over gloss black. So I would imagine the layer of paint actrs as a primer...
