I am going to be starting Dragons Jagdpanther w/ Zimmerit (kit 6494) and was just thinking to myself whether streaking effects would be noticable over zimmerit. My own common sense would tell me that streaks down the vehicles sides would not be noticable seeing as how any dirt, grime, or whatever would cause the streaking marks would just dissipate into the grooves of the zimmerit just like how when we apply washes to our models the wash settles into the nooks and crannies. What do you think? Have you ever seen any pictures of noticable streaking over a zimmerit covered surface?

I would definitely say no streaking on Zimmerit.

Nevertheless I find Zimmerit more difficult to weather realistically than bare "metal".

yeah, i figured there would be no steaking on zimmerit...infact, now that I think about it, it was kind of a stupid question lol...do you have any suggestions on how one may weather zimmerit? Only thing i can really think of is maybe a very light drybrushing of grey in spots where the zimmerit fell off which dragon does a good job of replicating...as far as i know zimmerit paste was grey but correct me if im wrong

Zimmerit is quite difficult to weather. First of all start by painting some chips over it. In places of green / red-brown camouflage you may add dark yellow spots which will simulate paint ware. Ultimately some grey chips (not many of them though) may be applied to simulate bare zimmerit For me washes, dusting and mud splashes (on the lower parts) should be used. Here's one of my (two) attempts to weather zimmeritted panzer: CLICKY

You may take a look on Michaels Rinaldi site (google for it). In his gallery you'll find a zimmerited Tiger II.. .a beauty...

Hi Michael... I agree that streaking on the zimmerit wouldn't work but what I did was to add an extra filter or light wash to the zimmerite to show a difference in the textures .. Also as for the wear on zimmerit ,I scraped off some of the zimmerit in places with a flat exacto blade then added a bit of Mr.Surfacer500 to smooth out the gouges . I then painted the center of the hole with a red primer color and the sides I used a light cream Sandy color to show the exposed zimmerit. Zimmerit apparently had a beige color to it . Here's what it looks like on my Elephant...

before the filters you can see the effect better..

15% of the zimmerit ingredients was ochre pigment, which is a darkish yellow. So chipped zimmerit would be yellowish. Where the zimmerit is chipped down to the vehicle surface the primer color would be exposed.

A bit late but yes no streaking on zim. Love that Eli btw. Have to agree that zim is very hard to weather realistically.
