I used to use a Polly S paint called "Earth Yellow" (#30257). It was a water based paint. My question is, does anyone know an equivalent now being made (since Polly S is gone)? I'd prefer an emanel, but would take an acrylic if need be. Thanks for any help you might offer.

Bob,
Although Polly S isn't listed, according to the Ultimate Model Paint Conversion Chart, FS30257 "EARTH YELLOW" is supposed to be:
Polly Scale #505392 "US TAC TAN"
Model Master #1735 (Enamel) #4673 (Acrylic) "WOOD"
Vallejo Model Air #824 "GERMAN CAMO. ORANGE OCHRE"
Vallejo Model Air #977 "DESERT YELLOW"
Vallejo Model Air #913 "YELLOW OCHRE"
Humbrol Enamel #63 "SAND"
Humbrol Enamel #93 "DESERT YELLOW"
TAMIYA Acrylic XF-59 "DESERT YELLOW"
There is supposedly two different RGB numbers under this FS color; C7914C and C39B69, which I take to be the reason for more than one color by some manufacturers.

Thanks for the info Jeff.
I know the ModelMasters and Tamiya colors aren't what I'm looking for. Both of them are carried by my LHS so I've had a direct comparison there. I'll have to check out the others.

Not meaning to highjack this thread but here's the rub.Don't get me wrong,paint4models.com is a great site, and I use it a lot.The problem is,just like majjanelson's list above, when you enter a color and get 3 or 4 different choices from the same company with different numbers (which means that they are different colors)How do you know which color is the true match?Jeff T.

Hi Jeff T. That's a problem, and the main reason why I won't order paint on line. In fact, I've found that you can't even rely on items being the same by number. I ordered 2 bottles of Tamiya XF-65 (1 acrylic and 1 enamel). They turned out to be completely different shades of green.

Morning Bob,glad to see that I'm not the only guy up this morning I have run into the "same number different color" thing also.
I have to get my paint on-line as the closest HS is over 2 hours away, and it's more of a craft store that sells models. That's why, when I have a question,I'll slap it up here and see what happens.Jeff T.

If you can take a paint chip of Earth Yellow to your local Walmart or other paint retailer, they can color match it. It's also quite inexpensive. The only problem is that it requires some experimentation to thin it correctly for airbrushing.

Matt,
80% windex to 20% paint will airbrush beautifully. The only caveat is that you MUST prime th emodel or the paint won't grab. HOWEVER, it's tough as nails (use hte flat exterior stuff) as it's designed to hang on the outside of your house for 10 years and will stand up to almost anything you throw at it. I've been using house paint for base coats for over decade now. The acrylics can be tinted very nicely with craft paints from AC Moore or Michael's. HTH.
Regards,
Georg

Jeff T - 2 hrs, huh? That does make life difficult. I'm glad I'm in a better situation here, otherwise I'm afraid I'd have a whole shelf of unused paints.
Matt and Georg - Thanks for the inspiration. You guys probably just solved my problem, though I have to wonder how long it will take me to burn through a quart of paint .... especially at a 20/80 ratio!
