Stephen: for mud on the vehicles I use the AK Interactive products (fresh mud, earth effects) mixed with plaster dust for texture.

Dirt from your garden mixed with white glue, can add paint to it if you want but it usually dries the correct colour

Hi Stephen,
Give Games Workshop Citadel Texture a try, reasonably cheap and you get good results quickly and easily. You can build the mud up and it dries fairly quickly. It was designed for bases on their figures as the younger modellers couldn't wait for the PVA glue and sand to dry (bless them) and wanted something quicker. I use 'Stirland Mud' which is a good earth colour, but can be over-painted if you need to. Hope this is useful.
All the best,
Paul

You can also use pre-colored tile grout.

Yep precolored tile grout works good with pigs on top.

do all the above and then you can paint with a coat of clear varnish to get the mud to look muddy
