Yes, an LCM 3 could carry a Sherman.

The LCM 3 was rated to carry one 30-ton tank, 60,000 lbs. of cargo or 60 troops, according to copies I have from of an old manual on landing craft. The 75mm Sherman weighed about 30 tons. To reinforce the point, there are a couple photos of Shermans and LCMs -- one showing a Sherman disembarking, the uther underway (on calm seas) in an LCM 6 (same as an LCM 3. but with a 6-foot section added amidships.

Found this reply on a messege board from a veteran of the war...it reads...

"the LCM boats, our medium tank battalion (M4Composites)used them during
our landigs on Leyte, Philippines, and also OKinawa. I'm sorry to say that I'm
ignorant as to which type or model LCM's they were. I do know that they carried
our tanks with no problems. Our company of 18 tanks, each tank in it's own LCM,
were placed aboard a LSD (Landing Ship Dock). The stern doors of the LSD were
opened and the well deck area was flooded. The LCM's with their M4's aboard,
motored inside, three LCM/M4's abreast, six rows. Once all LCM"s were abaord the
stern doors were shut and the well deck area ws pumped dry. The LCM/M4's then
sat on the dry bottom until time to leave. Disembarking was a simole reverse of
the above procedure.
Our tanks were equipped with two breathing stacks...one for intake air, the
rear one allowed engine exhaust gases to escape. Once ashore, a cable was pulled
by the commander and the upper portions of the stcks sim[ly disengaged and fell
away."

thought this might be of alittle help..kglack
