I am hoping for some help getting the shine off my models. This problem is a new one for me and I am wondering what I am doing different/wrong. I have been building for a few years and never came across this issue before. Here is the situation:
I am painting with Tamiya acrylics thinned with Tamiya thinner through my airbrush. I used Micro gloss in the decal areas and Micro flat after applying decals. I then used Testors Dullcote from the rattle can. My problem is I am getting a gloss to my finish that is nowhere near flat like I’d like. Try as I may, coat after coat I never get the dead flat finish I’d like.
Any advice would be appreciated I feel like I am going crazy as I have quite a few flat models on the shelf that were finished the same way (?)

Thanks, Jeff

You may want to decant some clear flat from a spray can. It is prethinned, so you can run it through an airbrush. This is a very strange problem. I've never run into a finish that wasn't able to be made flat with Testor's Dullcote.

You are using the wrong clear flat.

Testors Dullcote (#1260) with the black and yellow/orange label is really a semi-gloss.

For a dead flat finish, you need to use Testors Model Master Lusterless (Flat) (#1960) with a silver alabel with green stripe. It will give a dead-flat finish every time.

Matt and Gino,
Thanks for the help, I am using the 1260 and that must be the issue. I am going to order the 1960 and try my hand at de-canting it.
Thanks again for your help!

THANKYOU Gino,
I have used #1260 for ages and always had a slight shine.I talked to a Testors rep once and he never suggested #1960.

No reason to decant it at all. Straight from the can works great every time for me.

I've used Testors Dullcoat for years and never had this issue. Of course I don't use the rattle can, but the bottle #1160 and thin it 1:1 with plain old store bought lacquer thinner. I shoot it @ 15-18 psi and have never had any issues. Two coats give a deal flat finish.
