I'm building the Marine version of the HobbyBoss AAVP-7A1 RAM/RS and was wondering which figures would be correct for this. I'm looking at the Trumpeter 00407, 00424 and Tamiya 89772. Would any of these work and can I use more than one set?

Using those sets depends on the time period you're trying to depict - the Trumpeter 00407 and some of the Tamiya set would be okay for 2003, although the Marines were all wearing the Interceptor vest not the PAGST vest in the Tamiya set. The weapons are another story, the SAW stock is incorrect, the M16s are A2s which were in use in 2003. Marines wore either 3 color desert cammies or MARPAT desert cammies; during the march up we wore chemical suits, which none of the figures have.

Out of the three sets listed, Trumpeter 0042 is the best choice. They can be used for Marines from '03 through about '06.

Tamiya 89772 is not good at all for OIF. These soldiers are wearing older PAGST gear and have M16A1 rifles. They are only good through ODS, '90-'91 timeframe.

Trumpeter 00407 is a really crappy set since it is one of their older ones. The details are soft and the their bodies are oddly shaped. I would stay away from them.

Dragon's Modern US Marines set (3027) is good for early OIF figures as well.

For early OIF Marines in JSLIST chemical suits or in MARPAT, you have to go with resin figures.

By the way, the only US service that uses the AAVP-7A1 is the USMC.

Gino: Thank you for the input. I specified it as being a marine version, because it can also be built as the Spanish version.
