I have several M113 kits from Academy and wondered which type was most common in Europe circa 1992.

It could be an M113A2 or an M113A3 version. Both were still in service up through the early 2000s. We had both A2 and A3 veariants in Iraq.

Gino, has the M113 then been pulled out of regular front line service in the Army?
I assume some guard units may have them in their inventory or have they been retired from there as well?

No, M113s are still around. Most are used in support roles in Armor and Mech Infantry Bns. They have been used in support roles for years, so it is not really a new concept. Since the Bradley was fielded, M113s have been pretty much only in support roles such as maintenance vehicle, engineer vehicles, ambulances, mortar carriers, etc.

Thanks. BTW what about the baskets along the sides in the Academy M113a3 model? I ordered it because it was much more readily available.

The basket represents (poorly - the actual ones had flat bars, not round) a vehicle from 2 BDE, 3 ID during the invasion of Iraq (Mar-Apr '03). Only 2 BDE, 3 ID had the baskets on the sides of their M113s and M2A2s. The baskets were built onto APS 5 (Army Prepositioned Stock) vehicles from Kuwait by local Kuwaitis.
This is how the actual baskets looked.

Are the baskets unique to Iraq then?

Yes, and only to one BDE (2 BDE, 3 ID) during the invasion. The racks were removed from most of the vehicles as they were turned in when 3 ID rotated out in late '03.

M113A3s were the version in use in Europe in 1992. I didn't see any M113A2s, only M106A2s. I would suspect that the POMCUS stocks may have had A2s but I don't know for sure.
