Hi,
I'm trying to find something that will resemble rope in 1/35th scale. I need it to "tie" down a load on a cargo truck so it shouldn't be too thick.
Where can I find some?
Joe.

I was able to find some twine at Wal-Mart in the "sewing"/ crafts section that worked pretty well. I will get you a picture and info later tonight. Cheers.

Kite string is perfect. It is a little more bulky than string or thread and doesn't have a frayed look to it.

I would go with the kite string or the string on Tea Bags.

I noticed something in the beading section of a craft shop yesterday, wasn't sure what it was known as generically, but an internet search suggests it is called Tiger Tail beading wire. It's made up of 7 strands of stainless steel wire, twisted like cable, and then nylon coated. It comes in various colours including black, steel grey and silver, and has an interesting rope or cable like appearance while also being 100% non-hairy due to the nylon coating. It comes in various thicknesses, e.g. 0.3mm, 0.4mm, 0.45mm, so there's a fair choice.
Here's a photo that shows the appearance up close, this is 0.45mm thickness:
I haven't tried it out on a model, but thought it might be of interest. In the shop, it seemed to me to not keep its shape completely, like memory wire etc., but it was very flexible. Not sure how easy it would be to get into position and keep it there.
More like cable than rope, I suppose. Also, there is dental floss...

Tiger Tail is fantastic for representing steel cable or braided lines in scale. Trouble is, the coating prevents the woven detail from showing under paint. So no painting TT "rope".
Ship builders have a variety of thread available to them as do railroaders. I found some really good, non fuzzy, twine of varying thicknesses in the beading isle at my local Hobby Lobby.

I wonder if the nylon can be removed without damaging the appearance of the cable? Maybe by burning it off?

Joe... I'm surprised no one has mentioned the "make some" option I do it all the time for my small scale builds.
Here's a pic of a tow cable I made for a 1/76th Jagdpanther I did. It could have been twisted a little more, but my drill was broken at the time I used some small guage copper wire, but if you used telephone or ear bud wire it should be small enough to make good rope in 1/35th.I would think 3 or 4 lenghts would do it.Jeff T.

Hello!
To make ropes, I usually use nylon twine dyed with bitumen.
See the result.
Cheers !

Silk thread from the beading section of the craft store works well, comes in different sizes and is available tinted in a buff/tan color, as well as white and black.

Joe - what thickness did you get? I got some pastic coated twisted wire (the plastic does come off) fromi my LHS but think it is giong to be a little stiff to bend round (and probably too thick for tie-down rope)...
cheers

Hiya Joe, I use simple kite string i got from wal-mart. I clip to lenght slightly burn the ends to keep from frayin' and paint what ever color ya want for rope and VOILA! Its a perfect size for 1/35th rope.

I get mine from a craft store, it's called "Jute Twine/String" it's a little fuzzy, but a quick pass with a lighter and it cleans it up perfectly to look like 1/35 rope. It leaves just a few frizzes here and there to simulate a nice scale rope.
