I'm going to be painting one of these (not my model btw!), a Land Raider from Warhammer 40,000 game. I'm fairly happy with the base colours, washes, powders drybrushing, chipping etc I'm going to be using, but was wondering about using a filter for the first time.

I'd like to use something that will tie the model together, whilst giving those big boxy armour panels some depth. Any ideas to what I could use ?

You could try different shades of orange, brown, maroon, pink and magenta. I've seen similar use of shades on black, with blue, purple and gray used to vary panels and create fading.

Thanks Russ, going to give it a go with the oil dot technique. I've already picked up burnt umber, perhaps combine this with magenta or a blue for the lower hull? Orange and a pink for the upper hull?

In addition I have a technique question. Normally you would brush vertically down the hull to streak and blend the oil paint. How would I tackle the very flat horizontal surface of the top of the Land Raider?

I try to spread it out to allow for wear from crew members and spills, or I'll start a streak on the top, where a puddle may have started. Green paint will give good contrast when blended against the red. With blue, yellow or ochre, maybe orange and even a crimson color, you should get some good variation in tone and depth.

From what I remember of my reading about the traditions of the Space Marines, if you wanted to add further distinguishing marks, it would be plausible to pick a place to put a large red-brown stain, lightly flaked for irregularity, with the mark being the carefully preserved bloodstain from where [insert name here] died while performing [suitably heroic action], the blood he spilled on the vehicle while he refused to retreat for medical treatment having been preserved as a mark of honor and an encouragement to the unit.
