If you want to do only a small scenette with only figures the first photo is better, if you want to do something bigger the second.
I prefer the second, it's more intressing and there are a lot of figures and vehicles..

Greywolf

Personaly I would go with the second picture. The vehicles and the troops in fox holes is a lot more of a visual image.

I think that making a dio based on the top photo would be a lot of fun. To pull it off correctly you would need to make convincing looking mud, water and wet uniforms. Hmm...challenging...

I've seen that top pic before. I even think I saw that scene on TV !
Looks horrible huh ? Look how the guy is actually trying to get some SLEEP in that pit of mud ? That's what military life can be all about !
I think the guy deserves that someone make a dio of this !

I like the first one for the contrast of mud in Iraq. Who knew it rained????

I think the second one will be a more interesting diorama overall.

The second one is cool because all of the different figures and vehicles. However I think the first really shows the real nitty gritty of it all. You could place them next to something such as a Bradley or a couple of Humvees if you wanted to.

I understand about digging in, but is it just me who thinks that second picture is a bit eerie?

Personally, I like the first pic the better. It really shows how war is not all Guts and Glory. To meet the requirement for some flag you could place a small hand waving flag (type used for parades) and insert it in the berm.

Hmm,
something unusual on the bottom picture look at the wagon on the left hand side just behind the trailer in the picture, It looks like a newer shaped British four tonner
wonder how that got there!
